Opinion: A 'no' vote in Middlebury would delay progress, cost more money

Posted on May 7, 2014 |
By Marilyn Needham

What does a NO vote on the Town Office Project really mean?

Money wasted heating and patching up the current buildings while we consider other options.

Town workers being subjected for many more years to an unhealthy and unsafe work environment.

Teen and senior centers in a facility with no fire alarms and limited egress.

Handicapped citizens having limited access to town offices.

Victoria DeWind has raised the question as to whether the proposal to build town offices on the Osborne site, new recreation facilities on Creek Road, and replacing the present municipal building and gymnasium with a park is in compliance with the town plan.

Opinion: Current plan a 'darn good solution' for Middlebury

Posted on May 7, 2014 |
By Frank Winkler

Throughout the 45 years I have lived in Middlebury, two recurring issues have dominated local politics: a second bridge across the Otter Creek, and what to do about our deteriorating town offices. A few years ago, we came together as a town to address the first of these, and the happy result was the Cross Street Bridge — made possible, in part, by a generous contribution from Middlebury College.

Opinion: Lead petitioner describes concerns with current plan

Posted on May 7, 2014 |
By Skip Brush

I respectfully urge all registered Middlebury voters to vote on Article 1 on Tuesday, May 13. Even if you voted yes on March 4 for Article 6 related to the municipal offices/gymnasium proposal, I urge you to consider voting NO on May 13.

I offer the following reasoning on three issues for you to consider. The location of the municipal building next to the library, the gymnasium on Creek Road near the old American Legion, and the financial concerns.

MIDDLEBURY — About 800 runners participated as individuals or as part of two-member teams in Sunday’s sixth annual Middlebury Maple Run – The Sweetest Half, a popular half-marathon that was held this year in cool and showery conditions.

Montpelier’s Sue Hackney, 57, provided one of the highlights on Sunday, setting a new masters women’s (over 40) course record at 1:31.58 in finishing second overall among women behind West Windsor’s Phoebe Novello, 20, who won in 1:31.17.

Gun show brings the shop to firearms buyers

MIDDLEBURY — When Michelle Hudson laid out her display at the American Legion on a recent Saturday morning she admitted she had a bit of an inventory problem.

Overflowing from soda cases were hundreds of rounds of ammunition for firearms of all caliber, packed into plastic bags and small cardboard boxes without any semblance of organization.

Opinion: Voter thankful for second shot at Middlebury project

Posted on May 5, 2014 |
By Carol Eckels

I wanted to take this opportunity to say “kudos” to Skip Brush for giving the taxpayers of Middlebury the opportunity to look at alternatives to the current town hall and gym project. We can take advantage of this opportunity by voting “NO” on the reconsidered article on May 13 or earlier by absentee ballot.
