Middlebury recycler plans to scale back business, blames ANR for miscommunication

Posted on January 23, 2014 |
By Zach Despart

MIDDLEBURY — A Middlebury recycling firm is drastically downsizing its operations and selling its building after months of sparring and a court battle with the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources. Good Point Recycling’s president points to the ANR for some of the firm’s problems, alleging that agency official misrepresented to potential customers the cost of doing business with Good Point.

Editorial: Clear options for Middlebury

Posted on January 23, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

After 20-plus years of intermittent discussion and an occasional vote, Middlebury residents will have a clear choice this Town Meeting Day on three options for their municipal building:

• To keep it as it is, do constant repairs and inevitably face another vote in the not too distant future to replace the current building;

• To raze the current municipal building and build new on that site at an estimated cost of $6 million to $10 million, or to renovate at a cost of $2 million to $4.5 million, all paid with taxpayer dollars;

Opinion: Spot proposed for town offices

Posted on January 23, 2014 |
By Robert Kellogg

Am I too late to suggest the ideal solution to our venerable town hall?

Just drive, or walk, to the police station. There lies scenic land, plenty of space for parking, bike and walking paths to the Marble Works, old railroad station near where a new train station would appear behind Greg’s. And, removed from the college concerns.

Think ahead. Save the town from migrating south.

Opinion: Downtown sites over-valued?

Posted on January 23, 2014 |
By Alpine Bingham

Let us review the experience of the local banks in regard to in-town and Route 7 locations. People’s United moved its Middlebury operations from in-town to Route 7 quite seamlessly. Meanwhile, National Bank of Middlebury has found their Route 7 branch valuable to customers, yet maintains that the Main Street building remains popular. They attribute this to the proximity to the post office. Note that Citizen’s Bank closed their Merchants Row branch, now continuing the office off Route 7 South.

Posted on January 22, 2014 |
By Addison Independent

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Kevin Zey, 56, of Middlebury for first-degree aggravated domestic assault, following an incident at a Case Street residence on Jan. 19.

Police said they went to the residence upon being told of an alleged landlord-tenant dispute and that Zey had allegedly brandished a knife.

Police said they arrested Zey and took him to the Marble Valley Correctional Center, where he was lodged without bail.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

Opinion: Town will miss Nuovo; 'petty political tactics' decried

Posted on January 20, 2014 |
By Frank Winkler

I was deeply saddened to read that Victor Nuovo has resigned from the selectboard. Saddened by the fact that Middlebury will be losing the wise counsel of someone who has been a dedicated public servant for eight years. And saddened because some in our town seem to have sunk to petty, vituperative political tactics. Such have unfortunately become all too common in Washington, but Middlebury — and indeed all of Vermont politics — have seldom seen such outrageous behavior.

Middlebury selectboard pares down its town spending request

Posted on January 16, 2014 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Jan. 21 will take public feedback on a proposed 2014-2015 general fund budget of $9,154,323, requiring an anticipated property tax levy of $6,526,393.

The municipal budget, if endorsed by the selectboard and passed by voters at their March 3 town meeting, would account for a 1.85-cent boost in Middlebury’s municipal tax rate, which currently stands at approximately 91 cents per $100 in property value.
