Russ Sholes senior group disbands, donates assets to CVAA

MIDDLBURY — The Russ Sholes Senior Center was a pretty big draw when it formed in Middlebury some 35 years ago. Dozens of seniors gathered regularly in the lower level of Middlebury’s municipal building to share potluck meals, chat, and play cards and board games. A group of crafts enthusiasts —whom then-Town Clerk Richard Goodro fondly anointed the “sew-sew girls” — would also meet up to stitch and knit together, making clothes that they would donate to local charities.

MIDDLEBURY — The distinguished watercolor painter Deborah Holmes is planning a return to Addison County this summer, after a five-year relocation to Greensboro, in the Northeast Kingdom.

The move north was inspired by a longing to produce a collection of work documenting family farms in Vermont. Holmes, who lived in Weybridge for more than two decades before moving to Orleans County, worked on more than 60 paintings of 12 farms in the Northeast Kingdom, inspired by the buildings, animals and pastoral landscapes.

Posted on May 19, 2014 |
By Ted Scheu

I know I’m not alone in breathing a huge sigh of relief that the vote for the new Middlebury town hall plan is over. Again. And I’m feeling very hopeful that we will move ahead now, as a community, to see these important projects through to completion with a spirit of openness and respect, as we have done before so many times.

By Angelo S. Lynn

Good for Middlebury. Residents turned out in high numbers for a revote on a municipal bond that confirmed its earlier decision to go forward with the proposed $6.5 million project. That 1,600 people turned out for a revote in mid-May, just 119 fewer than the initial Town Meeting Day vote, is a credit to voter participation and community interest.

Opinion: Middlebury voters need some additional choices

Posted on May 11, 2014 |
By Anna Rose Benson

People have lots of ideas about why to reject the current proposal for the town gym and offices when they vote this Tuesday. Many have ideas about what Middlebury could do instead.

Here is mine.

I’m the gardener at the Ilsley Library. The back garden there, though very small, has become a place that welcomes not only people but honeybees, bumblebees, praying mantises, grasshoppers, rabbits, lots of different birds and butterflies, a neighbor cat, and a toad.
