Legislators to decide governor's race this week

Posted on January 5, 2015 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — A majority of Addison County’s lawmakers said they will vote in favor of incumbent Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin over Republican Scott Milne when the Vermont General Assembly decides the matter on this Thursday.

Per the state Constitution, the General Assembly must decide the contest by ballot when it convenes Jan. 8 because neither Shumlin nor Milne garnered more than 50 percent of the votes cast back on Nov. 4.

Next Thursday, the second day of the 2015 legislative session, one of the legislators’ first tasks will likely be their most important vote of the biennium: to decide whether Gov. Peter Shumlin will return to a third term or whether Republican Scott Milne would unseat him in a vote of the Legislature.

Opinion: Milne deserves to be elected

Dear Legislators,

Consider the possibility that Mr. Shumlin should have had some knowledge prior to his announcement that the single-payer program would be too expensive. After all, he was two years in arrears in reporting to you, the Vermont legislator.

Eric Davis: Milne hoping for instant-runoff win

Posted on November 26, 2014 |
By Eric L. Davis

For the third time in 12 years, Vermont’s Legislature will elect the governor in January, because no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote on Election Day. Vermont is the only state in the nation where the Legislature can elect the governor. This provision has been in the Vermont Constitution for over 200 years.

I appreciated the recent opinion letter from my Democratic counterpart, Bob Zeliff, regarding the outcome of the Milne/Shumlin race and the necessity of a legislative vote to determine the next governor.

Opinion: Milne is backpedaling on his pre-election pledge

Posted on November 12, 2014 |
By Bob Zeliff

I’ve become disturbed in reading about Scott Milne spending time weighing his options concerning the election results. As recently as two weeks ago he indicated that the election should be determined by the popular vote. Now he is backpedaling that, considering other options. His option of requesting a recount is certainly valid, but expensive, as Lt Gov. Phil Scott pointed out recently.

This week’s writer is David Sunderland, chairman of the Vermont Republican Party.

Twelve months ago the Vermont Republican Party established a new, more positive vision for itself and Vermont. We listened, heard Vermonters’ concerns and crafted solutions and proposals that address the issues that matter most to them. This will continue to be our approach as we work to move Vermont forward.

Editorial: The Independent endorses candidates

Posted on October 30, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

When voters go to the polls next Tuesday, Nov. 4, the role they should assume is that of the boss making new hires. The voters’ job is to sort through the various applications, review their records and accomplishments, and hire the best candidates for their respective positions. This is not a popularity contest, but rather a nuts-and-bolts analysis of which candidate will best serve in the elected position.

With that in mind, we offer the following endorsements and comments on the upcoming election:

Here are some things to look for as Vermont election results are reported next Tuesday night.

Turnout. Off-year turnout in Vermont typically runs between 55 and 60 percent of the registered voters. This year’s turnout is likely to be between 45 and 50 percent, about 10 percent lower than normal.
