U.S. serviceman with Austrian roots to deliver Memorial Day address

VERGENNES — George Jaeger’s service to his country started when he was 18, operating a mortar during World War II. It would later include acting as an interpreter in a war crimes investigation team as the horrors of the Holocaust were made visible to the world and for, 35 years, working in the U.S. Foreign Service.

Next Monday, Jaeger plans to draw on these experiences in a keynote speech at the Memorial Day Parade and Observance in Vergennes.

Date set for vote on governance of Bristol-area schools

BRISTOL — Residents in the Bristol-area towns in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union will vote on whether to institute a unified union governance structure that would put all schools in the district under one school board and one budget.

The ANeSU Act 46 committee announced last Friday that it will hold a vote on a unified union school governance structure for the five-town area.

Army private stumbled upon Nazi tanks at end of WWII

Editor’s note: This Sunday, May 8, marks 71 years since the Allied Victory in Europe, known as VE Day. In May 1945 as World War II came to an end in Europe, George Jaeger, now a New Haven resident, found himself celebrating the end of hostilities in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia. Just shy of 19 years old, he had crossed Europe as a GI war crimes investigator with Fifth Corps Headquarters, which had been assigned for the last push to Gen. George Patton’s Third Army.

Local college entrepreneurs win prizes

BURLINGTON — Two Addison County men who attend Champlain College and a Middlebury College student are sharing $10,000 in prize money awarded last week in a competition for collegiate entrepreneurs. The money will be used to help them launch their respective companies.

Matthew Giles of New Haven and Cullen Jemison of Starksboro, who both attend Champlain College, are the founders of Thermouse. At the first-ever LaunchVT Collegiate Competition, on Feb. 19, they won first place and $7,500.

New Haven brings skepticism to Vt. Green Line Q&A session

NEW HAVEN — New Haven residents continue to grapple with whether — and on what terms — to accept the Vermont Green Line, a 400-megawatt renewable energy transmission project that proposes to site a large electrical converter station near the VELCO substation.

Last Tuesday, Dec. 8, more than 100 residents packed the New Haven Town Hall for an informational meeting, conducted according to Town Meeting rules and overseen by town moderator Pam Marsh.

Powerline developer sweetens the deal for New Haven

NEW HAVEN — A company looking to build a massive power converter station in New Haven as part of a renewable energy project said it would not only pay an estimated $2.6 million annually in property taxes, as previously promised, but officials have added more sweeteners.

Officials representing Anbaric Transmission’s Vermont Green Line Project told the New Haven selectboard on Tuesday that they would pay the town $700,000 for 20 years. They also spoke about additional support the project would give the town.

DiNapoli assumes lead at ANeSU after Superintendent Adams goes on leave

BRISTOL — The superintendent of the Bristol-area school district, David Adams, has gone on leave, and the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union school board has named Assistant Superintendent Catrina DiNapoli to take over his duties while an “acting superintendent” is found.

Adams has drawn fire in the past seven months as voters rejected budget proposals for three of the district’s six schools, the teachers’ union voted no confidence in his leadership and a petition signed by 500 people asked for his resignation.
