Burlington – From overlooked to over-matched, the Otter Valley baseball team made any skeptic still standing fall flat.

Under the bright lights of Centennial Field, the Otters rolled to a 9-0 victory over top-seeded Burr & Burton, claiming the program’s first championship since 1976.

To reach the Division II state finals, the Otters defeated No. 3 Lamoille in the semi-final match-up as Justin Owen shut down the Lancer offense through 6.2 innings en route to an 8-1 victory.

BRANDON — A school could get used to this: Otter Valley Union High School pitcher Brett Patterson threw a one-hitter in the No. 2 Otters’ 6-0 win over visiting No. 7 Lake Region in a Division II quarterfinals on Thursday.

A model of efficiency, Patterson threw just 67 pitches, struck out nine and walked none in just an hour and 20 minutes to send Lake Region packing. And the senior hurler and co-ace Justin Owen have been consistently on their pitching all season, helping the Otters to a 17-1 record.

BRANDON — The Otter Valley Union High School softball team late last week twice won in its last at-bat and gave long-time coach Pattie Candon her 300th win as OV’s softball coach. (See story.)

That milestone win came on Thursday, when OV erased a 5-0 deficit to defeat visiting Hartford, 6-5, in eight innings. In that game, the Hurricanes misplayed Taylor Aines’ pop-up into a single that plated Brittany Bushey with the decisive run.

BRANDON — When Otter Valley Union High School softball player Taylor Aines’ towering eighth-inning pop-up dropped on Thursday between two confused Hartford infielders while teammate Brittany Bushey raced home with the decisive run, the celebration that followed was above and beyond what most dramatic walk-off wins receive.

Even more than capping a wild rally from a 5-0 deficit and producing a 6-5 victory that snapped a four-game losing streak, that play gave Coach Pattie Candon the 300th win of an OV softball coaching career that began in 1986.

BRANDON — This spring the undefeated Otter Valley Union High School baseball team has relied on solid starting pitching, sound defense and timely hitting from the top of the order to the bottom.

The formula worked again on Tuesday, when the Otters knocked off visiting Leland & Gray, 6-1, to improve to 10-0. The Rebels dropped to 6-2.

After a first inning in which senior starter Justin Owen allowed a walk and two hits and an OV error also led to the Rebel run, both Owen and the defense settled down.

BRISTOL — The host Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ lacrosse team picked up a 12-3 victory over Otter Valley on Monday that the teams’ coaches viewed differently.

Eagle co-coach Paul Low saw a result sparked by junior attacker Travis Bachand’s five goals and three assists as a much-needed confidence boost for a team that had lost five straight after a 2-1 start, including three one-sided games last week.
