Women's lacrosse cruises past Bobcats, reaches 10-0

LEWISTON, Maine — The Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team took a 5-0 lead on Saturday on the way to a 12-5 NESCAC victory at Bates. The Panthers, ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division III, improved to 10-0, 6-0 NESCAC heading into a  home game this coming Saturday vs. No. 10 Trinity. Bates, ranked No. 8, dropped to 10-2, 5-2 NESCAC.

Panther women switch off U-Mass Beacons, 4-0, in NCAA quarter-final

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s hockey team sent another postseason crowd of about 1,000 fans home happy on Saturday, when the Panthers dominated UMass-Boston, 4-0, in an NCAA quarterfinal played at Kenyon Arena.

The crowd for the 21-4-3 Panthers’ semifinal against No. 1 Plattsburgh (27-1) at 3:30 p.m. Friday will not be as friendly — the Cardinals’ Stafford Arena, where the home team always enjoys solid support. The final is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Men's hockey edges Hamilton to advance

CLINTON, N.Y. — The fifth-seeded Middlebury College men’s hockey team knocked off host No. 4 Hamilton on Saturday, 2-1 in overtime, in a NESCAC quarterfinal to earn a berth in this weekend’s league final four, which will be hosted by No. 2 Trinity.

Middlebury women's basketball tops JSC, hit 3-0

JOHNSON — The Middlebury College women’s basketball defeated host Johnson State, 57-52, on Nov. 24, to improve to 3-0. Middlebury returns to action on Saturday at Skidmore at 2 p.m.  

Middlebury held off a late surge vs. the 1-4 Badgers, who cut the Panther lead to two with 44 seconds left, but a layup and three free throws iced the win.

Colleen Caveney scored five points as the Panthers took a 14-9 lead after one period. Middlebury settled for a five-point lead at the half, 26-21, after leading by 23-13 late in the second period.

Panther men edged twice in hockey shootout

NORTHFIELD — The Middlebury College men’s hockey team suffered a pair of one-goal losses this past weekend at the Primelink Great Northern Shootout, which was hosted by Norwich University.

Plattsburgh (8-0) defeated Norwich in overtime on Saturday to win the tournament.

On Friday, Plattsburgh held off a Panther rally to prevail, 5-4, in the first round of the tournament. The 1-2-1 Panthers battled back from a 4-2 deficit to tie the game in the third, but the Cardinals scored with 5:13 remaining to earn the win.

Men's hoop splits four contests

TROY, N.Y. — The Middlebury College men’s basketball team split four recent road games and stand at 2-4 heading into Thursday and Saturday games at Johnson State and Skidmore, respectively.

On Nov. 24, Middlebury picked up its first win, 80-63, at New Paltz. The Panthers never trailed in the contest and shot 47.5 percent from the floor and forced New Paltz into 13 turnovers in the first half in taking a 45-27 lead.

Middlebury shot 44.6 percent (33 for 74) from the field overall and finished with a 48-42 edge in rebounds.

Panther women's soccer earns two wins

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s soccer team picked up two recent wins to improve to 5-3-4, 3-2-3 in NESCAC play. The Panthers were set to play at St. Lawrence on Wednesday and will return to action on Saturday at Tufts.

On this past Saturday, the Panthers blanked league foe Trinity, 3-0. The Bantams dropped to 8-4, 4-3 in NESCAC play.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team won two recent home games to improve to 10-2-1, 5-2-1 in NESCAC play. The Panthers return to action on Saturday at Bates.

On Saturday, the Panther rallied past visiting league foe Trinity (5-5-3, 2-5-1 NESCAC) to win in overtime, 2-1, as Kirk Horton scored both goals.

College field hockey too much for two foes in shutout wins

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College field hockey team posted two one-sided shutout wins this past weekend to improve to 12-1. The Panthers entered this week ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division III and will visit Bates on Saturday.

On this past Saturday, the Panthers scored four goals in less than 12 minutes in the first half in a 6-0 win over visiting Trinity. Three of those goals came from Pam Schulman.

Panther football rides big second half past visiting Williams

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College football team scored 27 second-half points on Saturday in a 36-14 win over visiting Williams (2-2) as the Panthers improved to 3-1 and defeated the Ephs for the fourth straight time. Middlebury returns to action this weekend at Bates.

Williams got on the board first with a three-yard touchdown run from Noah Sorrento with 14:36 left in the second quarter. The drive was set up by a 32-yard punt return from Mark Pomella and a 17-yard connection from Austin Lommen to Colin Brown.
