Women's hockey takes two from visiting White Mules

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s hockey team opened its campaign by sweeping two games from visiting NESCAC foe Colby this past weekend, 2-0 on Sunday and 7-1 on Saturday. The Panthers, ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division III, do not play at home again until January. Next up are two games at Trinity this weekend.

Panther men's hockey leaves Maine with tie, loss

WATERVILLE, Maine — The Middlebury College men’s hockey team opened with a tie and a loss over the weekend in Maine, tying Colby on Sunday, 2-2, after falling to Bowdoin on Saturday, 6-0. The 0-1-1 Panthers will open at home this weekend with two more NESCAC games, vs. Tufts on Friday evening and vs. Connecticut College on Saturday afternoon.

Panther runners qualify for NCAAs

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Middlebury College women’s cross-country team took second and the men were fifth at an NCAA Division III New England Regional hosted by Williams College on this past Saturday.

The Panther women earned an automatic bid to this coming Saturday’s national championship meet at Wilmington College in Ohio, while the men were awarded an at-large bid.

The women, ranked No. 3 in the country, came in at 105 points, trailing fourth-ranked MIT’s winning total of 40. The 12th-ranked men finished fifth with 136 points.

Panther men's hoop opens up with victories

BIDDEFORD, Maine — The Middlebury College men’s basketball team opened its season by winning a four-team tournament at the University of New England this past weekend. The Panthers defeated the host Nor’easters (1-1) in Sunday’s final, 69-67, after topping Mitchell in Saturday’s first round, 101-71. Middlebury returns to action this weekend at another tournament, this one at Bridgewater (Mass.) State.

On Sunday, Connor Huff’s offensive rebound as time expired snapped a 67-67 tie and gave the Panthers (2-0) the victory.

Women's basketball takes Smith tourney

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. — The Middlebury College women’s basketball team this past weekend rode big scoring performances and solid defense and rebounding to a pair of wins at Smith College’s season-opening tournament.

In Sunday’s final, Panther freshman Sarah Kaufman scored 32 points as the Panthers defeated Smith, 67-50, and in Saturday’s first-round game, Elizabeth Knox netted a career-high 29 points as the Panthers defeated Endicott, 67-46, in their opener.

Panthers sweep regionals, on to Final Four

MIDDLEBURY — After a dominant performance on home turf in this past weekend’s NCAA Division III Regional, the 19-1 Middlebury College field hockey team is going back to the NCAA Final Four for the first time since 2011.

The Panthers, ranked No. 2 in the most recent coaches’ poll, dismissed No. 5 Ursinus, 5-1, on Sunday in the regional final, a day after rolling over the University of New England, 7-0.

Middlebury football rips tufts

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College football team thumped visiting Tufts on Saturday, 48-13, to finish its season with five straight wins and a 6-2 record, good for third place in NESCAC.

Middlebury quarterback Matt Milano accounted for all seven touchdowns against the Jumbos, who enjoyed their best season since 2008 and finished with a 4-4 mark. Middlebury has now won 20 of 24 games over the past three seasons.

Panther field hockey to host NCAA regional

MIDDLEBURY — After winning its third consecutive NESCAC playoff title this past weekend, the Middlebury College field hockey team will host an NCAA Division III Regional this coming weekend.

The No. 3 Panthers (17-1) will open NCAA play at 11 a.m. on Saturday, when they will meet the winner of a game late Wednesday between Commonwealth Coast Conference champion University of New England (16-6) and Great Northern Athletic Conference winner Simmons (13-5).

Women's soccer loses to Ephs in NESCAC semifinal

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. —  The defending NESCAC champion Middlebury College women’s soccer team saw its season come to an end on Saturday with a 2-0 loss to host Williams in a NESCAC semifinal.

The Ephs, ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division III, improved to 16-1, but lost to Connecticut on penalty kicks in the league final on Sunday. The Panthers, who reached the NCAA final four in 2013, finished at 10-7.

Men's soccer bows out of NESCAC tournament on penalty kicks

AMHERST, Mass. — No. 6 Bowdoin eliminated the No. 4 Middlebury College men’s soccer team on penalty kicks in a NESCAC semifinal at Amherst College this past Saturday. The 9-6-2 Polar Bears edged the Panthers (9-3-5) by a 3-2 count in penalty kicks to advance to Sunday’s final. Bowdoin also defeated top-seeded Amherst via PKs in that game.
