Voters OK Vergennes Union Elementary School budget

VERGENNES — Voters in the three towns that send students to the Vergennes Union Elementary School approved a proposed spending plan by a margin of 447-322 on Town Meeting Day. 

The school budgeted $4.08 million in spending for the fiscal year that beginns July 1.

Votes from Vergennes, Waltham and Panton are co-mingled, so results from the individual towns are not available.

Waltham to lose a school director; Panton will seek a selectman

PANTON — A longtime Waltham school director will reportedly step down, and Panton will have at least one new selectboard member in March, but little change in the ranks of Addison town officials looms on Town Meeting Day.

In Waltham, Kristin Bristow will not seek to be re-nominated from the town meeting floor to the Vergennes Union High School board, according to Addison Northwest Supervisory Union Superintendent Tom O’Brien.

Bixby seeks more funding from towns as its endowment dwindles

VERGENNES — Facing a fiscal crisis that Bixby Free Memorial Library board members believe could bankrupt the Vergennes fixture in a few short years, those board members this winter approached the five communities the library serves seeking a major boost in the support it receives within town budgets.

Bixby board members said they understood why responses from local selectboards were mixed when the Bixby initially asked for an increase in support from $13.66 per resident to about $24.

GOP taps Castimore, VanWyck for the late Rep. Clark’s House seat

VERGENNES — Republican leaders in the Addison-3 House district on Thursday agreed to recommend two GOP nominees as candidates to serve out the two-year term of the late Rep. Greg Clark, R-Vergennes: Warren VanWyck of Ferrisburgh and Mary Ann Castimore of Waltham.

Vergennes elementary eyes 4.7 percent spending increase

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union Elementary School board on Monday night moved closer to adopting a 2013-2014 budget that would boost spending by 4.7 percent to a little less than $4.1 million.

Board chairwoman Tara Brooks said on Tuesday the board would hold a special meeting during the second week of January to make final a plan that would increase spending by about $190,000.

She said the board will probably adopt what they looked at on Monday.

“We’re pretty confident of where we are now in terms or our numbers,” Brooks said.

Panton leading lake Byway effort

PANTON — The town of Panton is leading an effort to extend the Lake Champlain Byway from Vergennes through Panton and Addison to the Lake Champlain Bridge and back to the Little City, and the other two communities have both signed on.

The Addison selectboard on Oct. 2 agreed to support the new Byway, and on Oct. 23 the Vergennes city council also came on board.

Tax bills on the way to Panton property owners

PANTON — Many, but not necessarily all, Panton homeowners should see lower tax bills when they open the envelopes this week, according to town treasurer M’Lissa Dayton.

Because Panton has just completed a town-wide reappraisal and individual assessments have changed, Dayton said maybe not all taxpayers will see bills asking for lower payments, half of which are due on Nov. 1 and May 1, respectively. 

“They (the results) will vary, and you will be getting them shortly,” she said.
