Smoking cessation program at Porter offers new ways to quit

Posted on July 22, 2013 |
By Luke Whelan

ADDISON COUNTY — Chuck Arel, 68, smoked two packs of cigarettes a day for most of his life after starting when he was 14.

On Nov. 26, 2012, after several failed attempts at quitting, he smoked his last cigarette.

“I knew it wasn’t healthy. I knew for a long time that smoking wasn’t good for anybody,” the Vergennes resident said. “But it’s not an easy habit to quit.”

Arel developed emphysema, and until quitting he had a chronic cough at night.

Community Forum: Health records problems must be solved

Posted on February 25, 2013 |
By Marvin Malek

This week’s writer is Dr. Marvin Malek, MD MPH, who is an internist working at Central Vermont Hospital in Berlin.

The financial problem that occurred recently at Porter Hospital isn’t the first and won’t be the last cost overrun we’ll see in Vermont related to the adoption of electronic health records (EHRs). Unfortunately, Angelo Lynn (Addison Independent, Jan. 10) grossly understates the magnitude of the health information technology (HIT) problem in the health sector, dismissing the Porter case as a mere cost mis-estimation.

Editorial: Porter Hospital's miscalculations

Posted on January 10, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

In doing the right thing, Porter got slapped around by the state regulatory agency for miscalculating how much a new, electronic medical records system would cost. The Middlebury hospital took on the challenge of converting to a digital (versus paper) based filing system of patient’s records because it believed it would provide better patient care in the long-term at less cost.

Porter Medical Center issues energy challenge to workers

Posted on October 29, 2012 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center will enlist the help of its more than 600 employees in finding ways to help reduce its annual energy bill of almost $1 million.

At issue is Porter’s participation in a new Efficiency Vermont program that will feature some on-site workshops on what workers can do to reduce power consumption. This will culminate in a contest for the Porter employees who submit the most creative and practical energy-savings tips. Those who submit the top three ideas, as judged by Efficiency Vermont, will receive $50 gift cards to local stores.

Donated paintings add life to hospital walls

MIDDLEBURY — Tragically, Elise Braun spent a lot of time in hospitals during the years leading up to the April 2009 death of her daughter, Susan Sebastian, following a lengthy illness. It was an experience rendered gloomier by the bare hospital walls that surrounded the two Vermonters during the months leading up to Sebastian’s death.

“Susan said to her mother, ‘There are pictures in the hospitals, but none in the patients’ rooms,’” said Gil Myers, a retired attorney and friend of Braun.

MIDDLEBURY — When we talk about cancer, we often speak of the genetic and environmental causes.

But according to Nicole Rohrig, nutritionist at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury, lifestyle has a role to play, too.

While cancer treatment plans vary widely depending on the type and stage of the disease, Rohrig said there are certain habits that can help reduce cancer risks.

Baker, 94, is face of volunteerism at Porter Hospital

MIDDLEBURY — A hospital can be an intimidating and foreboding place for those who first cross the threshold looking for a sick loved one somewhere in a veritable honeycomb of rooms.

Porter Hospital is no impersonal honeycomb, but visitors can still be anxious — until they see Mary Baker. It is then that furrowed brows become less crinkled and destinations become more clear as Baker smiles reassuringly, issues a warm welcome and asks if she can help.

And she invariably can.
