By John Flowers

EAST MIDDLEBURY — The Sand Hill Bridge is on schedule to be replaced during the spring of 2014 at a cost of more than $2 million in a project that will close Route 125 through East Middlebury for 40 days.

That was the word on Monday from Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) officials and representatives from the engineering firm of Vanasse Hangen Brustlin Inc. (VHB), who were on hand to explain the span replacement plan to around 25 people at a meeting at the East Middlebury United Methodist Church.

ADDISON/NEW HAVEN — For most of the summer, Route 17 between Addison and New Haven will be a bumpy ride.

The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) began a major rebuild of the 7.3 mile stretch in early June, and is slated to finish in mid-November. The $5.8 million project stretches from Route 7 to Route 22A, and began with shaving down the top several inches of road, revealing ruts and potholes beneath.

High bids to delay South Street work

Posted on June 14, 2012 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury will delay major reconstruction of South Street in wake of much higher-than-anticipated bids for the work, though the selectboard is reviewing some traffic calming measures that could be installed on the busy road in the meantime.

South Street and Green Mountain Place had been in line for a major overhaul, in large part to allow for replacement of water and sewer infrastructure. The surface of South Street has also fallen into disrepair over the years.

HANCOCK/GRANVILLE — More than a dozen people crammed into Hancock’s town office on Oct. 18 to urge the selectboard to take steps to open the still-closed Upper Churchville Road.

Nearly two months after Tropical Storm Irene hit Vermont, Granville and Hancock — the two Addison County towns hit hardest by the storm — are still finding it impossible to restore traffic on all town roads before the snow flies.

SHOREHAM — The Vermont Agency of Transportation will soon solicit bids for replacement of the concrete deck on the bridge that spans the Lemon Fair River on Route 74 in Shoreham, a project that’s expected to last more than a month and create some traveling headaches for commuters and businesses.

The 182-foot-long bridge was built in 1939. The concrete piers and deck have show growing signs of wear and tear in recent years, culminating this past winter in a large hole that appeared near the middle of one of the travel lanes.

BRISTOL — Bristol residents have consistently expressed that they are concerned about the safety of children, joggers and bicyclists that frequent the stretch of Route 17/116 between downtown Bristol and Lincoln Road.

A “pedestrian feasibility study” will be conducted throughout the summer to provide the town with several options for constructing a pedestrian path along this precarious stretch of road.

ADDISON COUNTY — Late last week, county residents living near streams, rivers and lakes watched with bated breath as water levels climbed in some spots to record-breaking heights.

On Thursday, levels in Lake Champlain topped out at 102.36 feet above sea level, then began to slowly decline. Following more rain in the area late that night, water levels hit 102.64 on Friday. Those levels were far above the flood stage of 100 feet, and they exceeded the previous record lake height of 102.1 feet, set in 1869.

WEYBRIDGE — Local lawmakers on Monday cited the so-called “provider tax” as a prime reason the state should scrap the current health care system and adopt a single-payer plan.

The House recently passed an increase in the provider tax that is assessed to hospitals, home health care agencies and other providers. It has now been extended to third-party health insurance claims.
