Court upholds Vergennes election recount

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Superior Court Judge Helen Toor on Thursday ruled against incumbent Vergennes Union Elementary School board director Cheryl Brinkman’s appeal of her 239-238 Town Meeting Day election loss to challenger Susan Ferland.

That tally had been confirmed by a March 12 Board of Civil Authority recount, but city officials also acknowledged a transcription error that day resulted in confusion over the total amount of votes cast.

VUES vote recount gets March 22 court date

MIDDLEBURY — The next stop for the one-vote Town Meeting Day election win posted by Vergennes challenger Susan Ferland over incumbent Vergennes Union Elementary School board director Cheryl Brinkman was set to be in a Thursday morning hearing in Addison County Superior Court.

On March 6, Ferland, a former Addison Central School teacher, edged Brinkman, a VUES board chairwoman and Addison Northwest Supervisory Union board member, 329-328, in a race for a seat on the VUES board.

Addison Northeast explores school unity

BRISTOL — School boards in the five Addison Northeast Supervisory Union towns of Bristol, Lincoln, Starksboro, New Haven and Monkton last week met with consultant Ray Proulx to explore options for school consolidation.

Proulx, who last year produced a report on costs and benefits of consolidation in the Addison Central Supervisory Union, laid out several options. Superintendent Evelyn Howard said each board should continue to discuss unification options at their upcoming meetings.

Mount Abe board accused of illegal executive sessions

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School Board meeting on Tuesday kicked off with a statement from Starksboro’s John Jefferies, a previous Robinson Elementary School board chairman, that he believed that the veiled nature of the teachers’ contract negotiations this past winter was unlawful.

Mary Hogan seeking to fill two board slots

MIDDLEBURY — The Mary Hogan Elementary School (ID-4) board is looking to fill two vacancies in the wake of recent resignations.

Board member Ruth Hardy has stepped down from the board in anticipation of a long-term family commitment abroad. She was in her first three-year term on the seven-member panel.

Serena Eddy-Moulton, an eight-year veteran of the board and its former chairwoman, also stepped down recently, citing a need to spend more time with family.

Addison school board seat contested in open race

ADDISON — On March 1, Addison residents will have a choice in an Addison Central School board race between a current board member who was appointed to her position in April 2010, and a former board member who stepped down in the 1990s.

The incumbent is Michele Kelly, who worked for 40 years as a college professor, 18 at the Community College of Philadelphia. A married mother of four and grandmother of six, Kelly said her ties to Addison go back 30 years.

Mary Hogan School board OKs increased budget

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters on April 13 will vote on a 2011-2012 Mary Hogan Elementary School spending plan of $5,899,867, which represents a 2.22-percent increase compared to this year.

It is a budget that maintains current staffing levels, does not add any new programs and recognizes an enrollment increase of 10 students (for a total of 400), according to Mary Hogan Elementary Co-Principal Tom Buzzell.
