County residents OK most school budgets

ADDISON COUNTY AND BRANDON — Voters on Town Meeting Day gave their approval to four out of the five local high school spending plans.

While residents of the five Addison Northwest Supervisory Union towns rejected the Vergennes Union High School budget (see story, Page 1A), proposed budgets in the rest of Addison County and northern Rutland County met with approval.

Voters defeat $6.2 million VUHS bond proposals

Middlebury-area schools to consider governance under one board

MIDDLEBURY — A committee exploring ways to streamline operations within the Addison Central Supervisory Union is recommending that residents in the seven-town school district vote on a referendum that some believe could reduce bureaucracy and create more educational equality and opportunities for students.

Specifically, the ACSU Study Committee wants to hold a vote on whether to combine some, or all, ACSU schools into a Regional Education District, known as a RED.

Ferrisburgh eyes school spending hike of about 4.9%

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh Central School board on Thursday could make final a 2013-2014 budget proposal that if approved by residents in March would increase school spending by about 4.9 percent.

The draft that board members will be working with on Thursday would add almost $152,000 to current spending and request approval of spending a little more than $3.26 million.

UD-3 board agrees on school budget with 2.7% spending increase

MIDDLEBURY — UD-3 school directors are poised to approve a draft 2013-2014 budget for Middlebury Union middle and high schools that reflects a 2.71-percent increase in spending, but officials don’t want to approve the plan until they receive more solid state aid information from Montpelier.

“I think bringing (the budget) in below 3 percent still allows us to maintain our programs,” said Addison Central Supervisory Union Superintendent Gail Conley.

VUHS bond to be discussed on monday

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School board hopes to hear from the public on Monday its opinions on a bond that could be floated as soon as November and might approach $5 million if all elements now being discussed are included.

In the past six weeks, according to Addison Northwest Supervisory Union business manager Kathy Cannon, school officials have begun leaning toward asking for two elements that were in early May less likely.

Teachers and negotiators strike ANeSU contract deal

BRISTOL — After almost two years of negotiation, the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union’s negotiating committee and teachers’ union this week came to an agreement on a teachers’ contract.

The exact terms of the new contract, which were ironed out Monday night in executive session negotiations, haven’t yet been released. But Lanny Smith, lead negotiator for the school boards, said that the terms will be made public after the first school board votes on the new contracts.

School administrators brace for big federal cuts

VERMONT — Superintendents and principals across the state are bracing for looming cuts in federal education aid.

The “potential catastrophe,” as Vermont Education Commissioner Armando Vilaseca put it, could lead to teacher layoffs and the end of crucial services for those students who need extra help, local education officials said.

Small group passes $6.1M ID-4 budget

MIDDLEBURY — On Wednesday, April 11, around 30 people voted unanimously in favor of a 2012-2013 spending plan of $6,144,811 for Mary Hogan Elementary School.

Bonnie Bourne, co-principal of the Middlebury school, said folks present at the ID-4 school district annual meeting asked a few clarifying questions about the budget before endorsing it by voice vote.

Mary Hogan school budget vote scheduled

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters next Wednesday, April 11, will be asked to approve a proposed 2012-2013 Mary Hogan Elementary School budget of $6,144,811, which would produce a 4.15-percent increase in spending but result in a small decrease in the education property tax rate.
