Shumlin: Education leads to good jobs

BRISTOL — Gov. Peter Shumlin on Monday at a legislative luncheon in Bristol urged Addison County residents and their legislative delegation to support his public education reform agenda in the next two legislative sessions.

He said that maintaining the status quo will leave future generations of Vermonters unable to compete in the regional or global economies.

Lincoln students reach beyond Vt. borders with exploration of India

LINCOLN — Students, parents and staff of the Lincoln Community School gathered in the building’s recently renovated gymnasium last Friday to celebrate a special month learning about the culture of India. The “India Festival” featured a shadow puppet show, a presentation of student artwork in traditional Indian styles, yoga, delicious Indian food and a magic show by local magician Tom Verner.

Educators fire up kids with after school classes

MIDDLEBURY — Susan Borg and Richard Nessen have already made an impact on education in the Middlebury area. Borg founded the Quarry Hill School in 1974, while Nessen helped establish the Bridge School in 1980. Both have placed a premium on teaching to individual students rather than trying to tailor subject matter to a large class.

It is a successful technique they would like to see passed on. But change in the education field rarely comes overnight.
