Sheldon Museum educates the public on dairy history

MIDDLEBURY — June is Dairy Month, and to celebrate, the Sheldon Museum will present a series of entertaining programs the weekend of June 14. The festivities are taking place in conjunction with the Sheldon’s current exhibit, “From Dairy to Doorstep: Milk Delivery in New England.”

Sheldon Museum unveils treasures from its attic

MIDDLEBURY — A trip to the household attic can often yield a few cherished family treasures with some interesting stories attached to them.

So it should come as no surprise that a trip to the attic of Middlebury’s Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History can yield a veritable gold mine of artifacts that speak volumes about the people, places and history of Addison County.

ALL ABOARD! Youngsters keep Sheldon trains rolling

MIDDLEBURY — If post-holiday season blues have already set in, the Sheldon Museum has a cure — at least until Sunday. The museum’s annual train exhibit will be taken down after this weekend, and volunteer Alex Shashok, 9, has a word of advice for anyone still on the fence about making a trip to 1 Park St. in downtown Middlebury in the next few days.

“It’s not going to be a boring waste of time,” Shashok said. “It’s going to be like the polar opposite of that.”

Sheldon Museum taps Brooks as its leader

MIDDLEBURY — Earlier this month, Middlebury’s Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History picked a local man with experience in the field as its new executive director.

William F. Brooks Jr. of New Haven took over on June 5 after eight years as the development director of the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation in Plymouth Notch.

Sheldon board of trustees chairwoman Marnie Wood said Brooks is an ideal fit.

Toy trains transport man on nostalgic trip

MIDDLEBURY — Some people can recapture their childhood through old photographs, friends, foods and fond memories.

But Paul Bortz uses a different vehicle to transport himself down memory lane — a train. Actually, more than 500 electric and toy trains that he enthusiastically collects and shares with his family and the public.

Sheldon tackles a big clean-up project

MIDDLEBURY — The Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History is cleaner than ever, despite a damaging shower of soot and ash earlier this fall. Sometime in the night of Sept. 29, a derelict parlor chimney dropped a load of soot into the building off Park Street in Middlebury. A cloud of dust damaged artifacts in three rooms of the museum.

Jan Albers completes chapter as director of Sheldon Museum

MIDDLEBURY — After six years at the helm of the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History, Jan Albers is ready to write the next chapter in her professional life.

Albers confirmed on Tuesday that she will be stepping down as executive director of the Sheldon — the repository of some of Addison County’s most treasured historical documents — effective this Friday, Sept. 30.

“The average stay for a museum director is five years, and I have been here for six,” Albers said with a smile.

Real-life Civil War love story to be brought to stage

MIDDLEBURY — In between dodging Rebel bullets and bayonets during the bloody Civil War battles of Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Cedar Creek, George Howe of Shoreham somehow found time to tenderly court the love of his life, Lorette Wolcott, through letters sent home.

County's pre-Civil War past on display in Sheldon exhibit

MIDDLEBURY — On April 12, 1861, the Confederate Army’s assault on the U.S. garrison at Fort Sumter in South Carolina officially signaled the beginning of America’s bloody civil war. Those shots 150 years ago symbolically reverberated through Addison County towns, temporarily shaking a placid, agrarian tableau as local men left the plowed fields for the battlefields.
