MONTPELIER — The state Legislature emerged from a marathon special session on Thursday with an amended version of a renewable energy siting bill that had been vetoed by Gov. Peter Shumlin on June 6.

The governor said on Friday that he would sign the bill, known as S.260, designed to give more local control over the siting of solar projects to communities that develop energy plans that are consistent with the state’s long-term renewable energy goals.

Editorial: GOP’s Turner sends anti-business message by politicizing S.230

Rep. Don Turner, R-Milton, is conducting a public lesson on how to politicize legislation, rather than simply fixing a problem and getting the job done.

And Turner, the leading House Republican, is also teaching Vermonters how the state gets viewed as anti-business.

Legislature to meet Thursday to rework solar siting bill

MONTPELIER — The Vermont General Assembly will meet on Thursday, June 9, to address Gov. Peter Shumlin’s recent veto of S.230, also known as the solar siting bill.

Shumlin vetoed the bill on Monday. The law was designed to give greater say in the siting of solar projects to communities that draft energy plans that are compatible with the state’s renewable energy goals. Some town officials have expressed frustration at the current system, which gives the three-member Vermont Public Service Board broad powers in the permitting of renewable energy projects.

ST. ALBANS TOWN — If you think rural Vermont and don’t think “technical innovation” — think again. Vermont homeowner Troy Turner became the recipient of Green Mountain Power (GMP)’s first Tesla Powerwall early this month, a cutting-edge, rechargeable lithium-ion battery that can store backup power, akin to an electric generator.

Turner is the first person in the state, and one of the first in the country, to receive the device.

PANTON — While Green Mountain Power waits for the Public Service Board to approve a huge solar array in Panton, GMP officials and the town selectboard have been working on details of not only a company pledge to Panton to upgrade town buildings, but also a larger effort to make energy-efficiency improvements available to Panton farms, businesses and homes.

Opinion: The aesthetics of solar siting must be taken seriously

Posted on January 28, 2016 |
By Merle Schloff

I am writing in response to Gregg Beldock’s Community Forum column on the siting of solar fields (“Solar helps farmers, creates jobs,” Jan. 18, 2016).

What’s wrong with a pig farm if it doesn’t stink?

It’s not just a rhetorical question for me, for I am the owner of the property with what I feel is the ugliest solar field on the Route 7 solar corridor.

Guest Editorial: Give Vermonters a voice in siting renewable energy

Posted on January 27, 2016 |
By Emerson Lynn

A bill that would ban industrial wind projects in Vermont was introduced this past week by Sen. John Rodgers, D-Essex/Orleans, and the effort drew cheers from a throng of onlookers in Montpelier.

Mr. Rodgers’ audience was part of an organized attempt to explain to lawmakers that Vermonters are frustrated with how little their voices matter when it comes to the siting of industrial-sized solar and wind projects.

Brandon site eyed for state's largest solar power farm

By Lee J. Kahrs

BRANDON/FLORENCE — A massive, 20-megawatt solar array is being proposed on more than 100 acres of land off Syndicate Road in Florence and Brandon, and if approved it would be the largest solar project in Vermont.

Representatives from Ranger Solar, based in Yarmouth, Maine, with offices in New York, appeared before the Brandon selectboard on Monday to give a project presentation and to answer questions. Those in attendance expressed a wide range of feelings, from enthusiastic to suspicious, with most town officials expressing support.
