Sports Column by Andy Kirkaldy: Local words of wisdom apply on the world stage

Posted on June 13, 2013 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

Typically, it’s reassuring when people who know more than you agree with your point of view.

On June 8 I was covering the Vergennes-U-32 quarterfinal softball game when someone with a more than casual interest showed up, Otter Valley coach Pattie Candon. Candon’s Otters had a potential semifinal matchup with the winner of that Saturday game, and was scouting.

Sports column by Karl Lindholm: Thoughts upon watching '42'

Posted on May 2, 2013 |
By Karl Lindholm

I knew I had a problem when my friend Ben, from California, e-mailed me after watching “42,” the Jackie Robinson story, and being profoundly moved. He said, “Tell me again why you’re not looking forward to seeing this movie.”

True, I have expressed ambivalence. I sometimes tire of the exclusivity of the focus on Jackie Robinson. The more I have learned about the African-American experience in baseball, the more rich stories and worthy figures I have become aware of.

Sports column: How good are the Panthers: Terrific

Posted on April 4, 2013 |
By Karl Lindholm

Whenever Middlebury hosts an NCAA men’s basketball tournament game, I buy extra tickets and wait for the phone call that always comes: “Karl, can you get me a ticket to the Middlebury basketball game?”

“Why, yes I can.”

This is a call, not so long ago, I never imagined getting. I love it. In the past, even when the Panthers were pretty good, the team played before mostly empty seats.

Sports Column: Wish list for 2013:Large wild brookies

By Matt Dickerson

I began 2013 with a mental fishing “wish list.” There are a few perennial entries: an all-expenses-paid trip for Atlantic salmon in Labrador or Newfoundland; more time to fish in my favorite Vermont rivers (plus a trip or two with family and friends to Maine and New York); and an increase in the quality trout waters in the state.

Sports Column by Andy Kirkaldy: Authority figures show bad side of pro sports

Posted on January 10, 2013 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

Every now and then the stupid side of sports is fully displayed.

This past weekend was such a time, and in more ways than one.

Let’s start with first things first. Word broke late on Friday that the National Hockey League owners and players had resolved their labor dispute after 113 days, and by Sunday it was confirmed.

It’s not that the resolution was unwelcome news, it’s that the words “labor dispute” are used kindly. It was all the owners and commissioner Gary Bettman’s fault.

Dickerson outdoor column: Of hobbits, the outdoors and love of Christmas

This past weekend I watched Peter Jackson’s latest spectacle, “The Hobbit.” Though the film revels in violent action, and in that way is very different from Tolkien’s classic book of the same name, the book and film do have a few things in common.

Sports column: The pain and the joy of going the distance

Walking around the track at Middlebury College one day last summer, I ran into my friend Jon Cormier of Bristol, or more accurately, he ran by me. He was kind enough to stop and chat with me for a while, at my pace.

Turns out he was training for a race, and not a local fun run, but the “Vermont 50” at Mt. Ascutney in September. That’s a 50-mile race, up and down and around the mountain, with 9,000 feet of climbing over its route.

Sports Column: Why one youth hunts (and more really ought to)

Posted on November 8, 2012 |
By Matt Dickerson

“Squirrels are way too loud!” That’s was the comment from 13-yearold Jake Pyne. It wasn’t really a complaint. Merely one of many observations he made while hunting with his father.

“When I’m in the woods hunting deer it’s hard not to notice other things. Just sitting quietly you get to see how the wildlife acts when they think no one is around,” was another.
