After the Town Meeting Day polls closed last Tuesday, our crew in the newsroom delivered up-to-the second results for towns across the county. As the numbers rolled in, we hustled to get them out to you ASAP.

Vergennes incumbents ousted

VERGENNES — Two multi-term incumbents lost re-election bids in Tuesday’s six-way race for three seats on the Vergennes city council, while two familiar faces seeking elective office in Vergennes for the first time earned the most votes.

Real estate appraiser and Vergennes Partnership President Bill Benton polled 350 votes to lead the field, followed by former city manager Renny Perry with 313.

Business fund wins approval in shire town

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters at their annual meeting approved a 2012-2013 municipal budget of $8,420,920 and agreed to establish a business development fund (BDF) to help attract new businesses and jobs to Addison County’s shire town.

More than 200 voters packed Middlebury’s municipal gym to consider a seven-article warning dominated by the budget and the proposed development fund.

Monkton defeats town hall plan again

MONKTON — In voting on Town Meeting Day, Monkton voters shot down a proposal for a new municipal building for the second time in two years, this time by a 286-224 tally. The new plan called for moving and expanding the town’s existing 152-year-old town hall.

Nuovo, Shashok returned to Midd board seats

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents on Tuesday voted to return incumbent selectboard members Victor Nuovo and Susan Shashok to office, and also added Gary Baker to the fold.

Nuovo (613 tallies) and Shashok (520) were the top vote getters in a five-way race for two three-year seats. Finishing out of the running were former Selectman Don Keeler (461 votes), Eric Murray (272) and Brian Bauer (239).

Baker was unopposed in his run for a one-year term, the balance of a term vacated by former Selectwoman Janelle Ashley.

Bristol OKs spending increase

BRISTOL — This year’s Town Meeting Day featured a two-way race for selectboard, a four-way race for school board and the Bristol police budget — a line item that was voted onto the Town Meeting Day agenda earlier this year. But first the town assembled on Monday to discuss a 5.96 percent increase in the amount to be raised by taxes for next year’s municipal spending plan.

Voters back local high school budgets

ADDISON COUNTY — Residents of Addison County’s three school districts and of the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union joined a statewide trend and offered strong support for proposed school spending.

Backing for the region’s four union high schools ranged from 59.7 in favor of Otter Valley’s proposed budget to 66.7 percent for the UD-3 budget that funds both Middlebury Union High School and Middlebury Union Middle School.
