LINCOLN — Mari Cordes has helped heal a lot of patients during her many years as a Registered Nurse.

The Lincoln Democrat is now writing a recovery plan for the state of Vermont that she hopes to administer as a member of the House of Representatives.

Cordes, 57, confirmed last week that she will run for one of the seats in the Vermont House representing Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton and Starksboro. She joins a growing field of candidates in the Addison-4 district.

Vermont Governor Shumlin calls for divestment and job creation

Posted on January 11, 2016 |
By Anne Galloway VTDigger.org

MONTPELIER — Gov. Peter Shumlin gave his sixth and final State of the State address to the Vermont Legislature on Thursday.

The uncharacteristically lengthy speech was a victory lap through memory lane, with a listing of accomplishments that lasted more than an hour. In the past, Shumlin, who has difficulty delivering long speeches because of his dyslexia, has kept his addresses short. This time, however, the governor spared no detail and appeared to be determined to defend his three terms in office.

Top stories of 2015: #8 — Juvenile and drug cases flood an overwhelmed justice system

Posted on January 4, 2016 |
By Addison Independent

08 front.jpg

Gov. Peter Shumlin shined a bright spotlight on the drug addiction problem in January of 2014 and, with a lot of help from many other advocates for those addicts, began to mobilize Vermonters to help solve the problem. But in 2015 it was clear that the opiate crisis is still ongoing. Drug addiction is still messing up previously promising young lives, causing heartache and fear in many, many Vermont families, and mounting untold costs to the economy.

The amount of disruption that drugs is causing was particularly clear to those who come in contact with the courts.

MONTPELIER — Gov. Peter Shumlin said he will quietly meet with stakeholders in the massive Middlebury rail bridges project in hopes of defusing, and settling, a growing dispute between the town and Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) officials regarding the size and duration of the estimated $40 million construction plan.

Views from the Vet: Get to know what goes on on a farm

Posted on August 20, 2015 |
By Joe Klopfenstein

Recently a client related a story to me. He was visited by representatives of the state occupational safety and health administration (OSHA). Apparently a passerby noticed material coming out of the barn doors while passing by on the road. The visitor was concerned enough to report the farmer for fumigating the farm with animals and workers inside. What was the mystery cloud? The farmer was applying fresh sawdust to the cows’ beds.

Editorial: Voters can take charge of the discussion in governor's race

Posted on July 2, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Since Rep. Peter Welch’s announced last Friday that he would seek reelection to Congress and not be a candidate for governor, the governor’s race has become the horse race to watch. Not only will the campaigns be fascinating from a political perspective, but the outcome has the potential to change the state’s present course or build upon the progress made over the past five years. As importantly, the public has the opportunity to mold the debates — especially as it pertains to economic growth.

Posted on June 8, 2015 |
By Fran Putnam

Last week in Dallas, Vermont State Treasurer Beth Pearce attended ExxonMobil’s annual meeting and spoke in support of a shareholder proposal to limit the company’s greenhouse gas emissions. Our treasurer spoke about the climate impacts that Vermont faces and that “climate change poses real financial risks.”

Recent state budgets have been paying costs forward

Posted on June 3, 2015 |
By Angelo Lynn

When Governor Shumlin signed the $616 million transportation bill last week, he punctuated a hallmark of his administration: continued long-term investment in the state’s infrastructure that will lay the foundation for a better economy long after he has left office. The same could be said of gains made in early childhood education, cleaning up Vermont’s waterways and Lake Champlain, investing in renewable energy programs, aggressively addressing the state’s drug crisis and on and on.

The transportation bill is a case in point.

Editorial: A salute to steps forward in the legislature

Posted on May 14, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The Shumlin Administration and the Vermont Legislature certainly have had their low points this session, starting with the governor abandoning his health care reform initiative and now being on the verge of scuttling the Vermont Health Exchange, as well as struggling to find ways to bridge a $130-plus million budget gap, but we’d be remiss not to note the few high points of the session, and to recognize the positive steps taken that move us forward.

Here are a few bills passed recently that will serve Vermont well.
