Artists open their studios to the public this Saturday and Sunday

ADDISON COUNTY/BRANDON — The Spring Open Studio Tour over Memorial Day Weekend offers a great way for locals and visitors alike to see the Green Mountain State as well as the work of Vermont artist right where it is made. Bright yellow signs are placed along Vermont’s roads to mark the way to studios of craftspeople and fine artists during the self-guided tour on May 24 and 25 at a time when the landscape is fresh and inviting and without the crowds of summer and fall.

Editorial: Is H.833 a step toward reform?

This year the Legislature has successfully crafted a viable bill, H.883, that focuses the public’s attention on education reform. That’s no easy task, and it’s to the credit of the House Education Committee under the leadership of Rep. Johannah Donovan, D-Burlington. That committee, along with its Senate counterpart, has been studying ways to bend the curve on education spending for the past several years, and, as importantly, craft a system that uses the money spent educating Vermont students more effectively.

Healthcare expert forecasts bumpy road in Vermont

MIDDLEBURY — Green Mountain Care Board member Dr. Allan Ramsay urged Addison County’s medical community to be patient as the state transitions to a new health care system that he acknowledged will be fraught with change and challenges.

“One of the things I’ve learned intensely over the past two years is that change is very hard,” Ramsay said at Porter Medical Center’s annual meeting last week. “It is very hard to change the system.”

Health care reform makes some gains; sign-up deadline looms

ADDISON COUNTY — Two key Addison County lawmakers involved in the state’s health care reform effort said they are pleased with Vermonters’ response to the new health insurance exchange and conceded that long-awaited financial details about the transition to a single-payer system probably won’t be available until early next year.

That was the word this week from Sen. Claire Ayer of Addison and Rep. Mike Fisher of Lincoln, both Democrats.

Porter, Counseling Service plan suboxone clinic to assist addicts
