By Zach Despart

BRISTOL — Reactions were mixed from the more than 30 Addison Northeast Supervisory Union residents who turned out for a special Mount Abraham Union Middle/High School Board meeting on the proposed $33 million bond to finance a substantial renovation of the school.

Most spoke in favor of the project, while others raised concerns about the price tag and the necessity of some of the more ambitious parts of the proposal.

Opinion: Milne has right vision for state

Posted on September 3, 2014 |
By Manchester Center

As a young adult living in Vermont, I feel so privileged to reside in a state filled with natural beauty, rich history, and kind-hearted people. However, like many young Vermonters, I’m at a crossroads over where I plan to live as I approach the next stage in my life. The direction of our state government is an important factor in my decision, as it is for many other young Vermont residents. I want to live in a state with economic security, employment opportunities and a quality education system.

Opinion: For sake of future, Brandon voters must compromise

Posted on August 11, 2014 |
By Brian E. Fillioe

My interest was piqued by recent letters in the Reporter (July 30 edition) and Gene Pagano’s letter to the Herald. I must say I am beginning to think Brandon is doing an impression of the Israelites when they were in the wilderness for 40 years.

Opinion: Brandon voters must offer ideas on budget impasse

Posted on July 14, 2014 |
By Brian Fillioe

Does Brandon need eight police officers? No. Does Brandon need four highway guys? No. Brandon could do with less; however, just as there is a cost to employing that number of staff there is a cost to not having enough staff. Chief Brickell told the selectmen at a recent meeting the effects of less than eight police officers. And in reality there are seven officers and a school resource officer that Brandon uses during the down school time.

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh residents on Tuesday will be asked not only to weigh in on a proposed $2.88 million Vergennes Union High School bond (see story, Page 1A), but also to approve an $850,000 bond to pay for most of a proposed $1.05 million, 5,940-square-foot, six-bay Ferrisburgh highway department garage.

That new highway facility, modeled after Bridport’s town garage, would be built on the same lot as the current highway garage, across Little Chicago Road from Ferrisburgh Central School.

Bristol changes its annual police meeting

Posted on October 3, 2011 |
By Andrew Stein

BRISTOL — Residents of the Bristol Police District on Monday voted to move their annual meeting from its traditional May date to instead coincide with the March town meeting.

The change also means that voters will be moving from a meeting format where they can debate and change the proposed annual budget on the floor to one where the budget is warned and voted up or down by Australian ballot without the opportunity to tweak it at the meeting.
