VERGENNES — On Sept. 21, Vergennes Union High School students, staff members and some area residents for the eighth time celebrated the United Nations Day of Peace, which the U.N. designated in 2001 to be on Sept. 21 every year.

For the past eight years, VUHS students — with the approval and support of the school’s administration — have organized a school-wide assembly on the school’s front lawn to support peace around the world, in their communities, at the school and in their lives.

VERGENNES — The visiting Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ soccer team controlled Saturday’s first half against Vergennes, scoring twice on the way to a well-earned 2-0 win.

The Eagles had the better of the chances overall, and some nice work by VUHS goalie Steven Paquette, especially in that first half, helped keep his team within striking range.

In the first 40 minutes Mount Abe got strong goals from Ira Fisher and Alex McCormick from clever setups by Cale Thygesen and Theo Weaver, respectively.

MIDDLEBURY — When Middlebury Union High School senior middie Lydia Allen’s 25-yard bomb hit the back of the net late in Tuesday’s first overtime, the host Tigers had defeated a stubborn Vergennes girls’ soccer squad, 2-1, and improved to 2-0.

And that’s as many wins as the program earned in the 2007, 2008 and 2009 seasons combined; equaled the number of its regular-season wins in Allen’s first varsity year, 2010; and is already halfway to its four-victory 2011 season.

It’s safe to say the Tigers are a bit pumped.

VERGENNES –– Fourteen-year-old Damian Bougor knew the Vergennes skate park needed seating and decided to do something about it.

“I go there every day and we just needed something to sit on after we’re done skating, so I figured we needed a bench,” he said.

His friend Ian Shalek took the idea further and suggested a bench made out of skateboards.

BURLINGTON — After the No. 2 Vergennes Union High School baseball team made it through a rocky first inning in their Division II semifinal win over No. 6 Otter Valley, winning pitcher Charlie Stapleford described the Commodores as resilient.
