Cornwall targets gas pipeline; officials suggest Whiting route

CORNWALL — Many residents of Cornwall are hoping to convince Vermont Gas Systems (VGS) to leave their town off its list of potential routes for a new pipeline that would funnel natural gas from Middlebury to the International Paper Co. in Ticonderoga, N.Y.

SHOREHAM — Vermont Gas this week unveiled five potential routes for its proposed natural gas pipeline that would extend from Middlebury to Ticonderoga, N.Y., a plan that at Monday’s legislative breakfast in Shoreham continued to draw criticism from area residents who oppose the prospect of seeing the project running through their respective properties.

BRANDON/WHITING/SUDBURY — The Vermont Department of Health late this month and next will hold three clinics locally to collect human blood samples that will be tested in a new study of Eastern equine encephalitis, or EEE.

Post office hours being reduced in rural communities

ADDISON COUNTY — As U.S. Postal Service officials implement a plan to wring costs out of rural post offices, some local residents have a last opportunity to affect how service will be cut in their towns.

USPS officials will host meetings in Monkton, Orwell, Shoreham, Hancock and Forestdale in coming weeks that will allow residents to give input on four options for cutting costs at their respective post offices — three of which include shutting the facilities down.

State officials to Whiting-area residents: Please take EEE tests

WHITING — State health officials hope to conduct blood tests on area residents and determine how many people may possess the Eastern equine encephalitis antibodies without ever having gotten sick. That’s the message from a series of three public information meetings they held in the area to update residents in the wake of the first two human cases of EEE over the summer.

Depending on funding, there is also a plan to expand mosquito surveillance next year and hire additional field assistants to help gather samples.

More EEE mosquito spraying planned for Friday evening

UPDATED: Spraying times announced.

WHITING/BRANDON — Vermont Department of Health officials this morning said that lightning and poor visibility made it impossible for them to fully complete the mosquito aerial spraying operation in Brandon and Whiting on Thursday evening.

Spraying of the pesticide Anvil 10+10 will continue tonight between 7:30 and 11 p.m. Officials hope to complete all spraying tonight.
