Editorial: Monkton school is in crisis

With the resignation of half of the teachers at the Monkton Central School last Thursday night, it’s fair to say the school is in crisis. What led to the massive resignations, and what the school system and the public can do about it should dominate the school community’s focus over the next several weeks.

Editorial: Proposal offers Middlebury a way to leapfrog obstacles

Another seismic swift in the Middlebury landscape has landed on the town’s doorstep after several months of study and determination yielded a mutually beneficial and generous response to the town by Middlebury College and that board of trustees. It’s a proposal, as always, that requires a studied review, but it shouldn’t take long to discern its financial advantages to town taxpayers.

What they’ll find is the offer resolves several major hurdles the town was facing — all with the least impact on town taxes.

Editorial: Drug crisis needs game plan

The economics of drug use has changed dramatically in the past generation. It used to be that heroin was an expensive drug, way out of the range of high school students and casual users who had to work for a living. In the 1980s, a bag cost about $100. Today, $10 will buy you that same bag of heroin — roughly the price of a pack of smokes or a high-priced beer.

Before talking about next year’s legislative priorities in a 45-minute phone conversation on Tuesday, Vermont House Speaker Shap Smith wanted to talk about a beef he had with the press coverage of the past session. Why, he wondered, did the press not give the House credit for proposing and passing a more conservative budget than what the governor proposed? Why did the House get lambasted as a hotbed of progressive legislation and liberal leanings, while the governor was seen as pro-business and moderate by comparison?

The Middlebury Select Board made as eloquent and rational an argument for supporting the Vermont Gas pipeline to Middlebury as can be made. The statement, which was published as a letter accompanying a front-page news story in last Thursday’s Addison Independent, is considerate of others’ perspectives, well-reasoned on all points, and defends what it sees as the best path at this time for the town and residents of Middlebury.

Editorial: Bickering in the Legislature grabbed headlines, but a lot of good prevailed

While the legislative session was dominated by a gnashing of teeth over cuts to the $1.3 billion General Fund budget and proposed tax increases, creating a clash between the Democrat-Progressive controlled Legislature and Democrat Gov. Peter Shumlin, it was also a session that produced several significant advances — including several social-cultural milestones and ended with a balanced budget without tax increases on income or sales.

Editorial: The making of political cynics

The cynic among us would note that the biggest danger of the Legislature not adjourning this past weekend is how much damage it can do in two more days.

A kinder analysis would note that because many budget issues were still unresolved, and the tax bill still incomplete, any late night heroics to finish by Saturday would have also been prone to error.
