Editorial: Green Up Day needs a boost

Posted on April 14, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Green-Up Day is in trouble. Earlier this year, news reports noted that three major corporate sponsors had opted not to renew annual donations that had comprised about 20 percent of the non-profit organization’s approximate $120,000 budget. Efforts to find other sponsors are ongoing, says Melinda Vieux, who heads the organization, but she noted that if they can’t come up with extra funds they would have to curtail efforts by 2015.

Editorial: H.552 — House plan unravels state's pro-business efforts

Posted on April 10, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The primary reason to phase in the minimum wage hike in Vermont from $8.73 per hour to $10.10 per hour over three years—instead of rushing to that level by Jan. 1, 2015 as House bill H-552 mandates—is so Vermont businesses can gradually adjust to the 15 percent hike in labor expenses and are not put at a disadvantage with neighboring states.

That argument, and the big-picture narrative that goes along with it, seems lost on many members of the House.

Editorial: Sen. McCain predicts Supreme Court ruling will lead to more scandal

Posted on April 2, 2014 |
By Angelo Lynn

Sen. Bernie Sanders may have had the quote of the week when he said: “Freedom of speech, in my view, does not mean the freedom to buy the United States government.” Then added: “What world are the five conservative Supreme Court justices living in? To equate the ability of billionaires to buy elections with ‘freedom of speech’ is totally absurd. The Supreme Court is paving the way toward an oligarchic form of society in which a handful of billionaires, like the Koch brothers and Sheldon Adelson, will control our political process.”

Editorial: Is H.833 a step toward reform?

Posted on April 2, 2014 |
By Angelo Lynn

This year the Legislature has successfully crafted a viable bill, H.883, that focuses the public’s attention on education reform. That’s no easy task, and it’s to the credit of the House Education Committee under the leadership of Rep. Johannah Donovan, D-Burlington. That committee, along with its Senate counterpart, has been studying ways to bend the curve on education spending for the past several years, and, as importantly, craft a system that uses the money spent educating Vermont students more effectively.

Editorial: Wage hike deserves Senate approval

Posted on March 31, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Gov. Shumlin’s call for an increase in the minimum wage hike to $10.10 an hour by 2017 is not only the right thing to do, it also makes economic sense.

No reasonable person can argue that a lower wage is good for business or the nation’s economy. The economic goal of the nation should be to create and nurture a vibrant and thriving middle class, which includes those at the lower end of the wage scale who see the merits of hard work yield a lifestyle that, at the very least, can put food on the table and shelter overhead.

Editorial: Shumlin's bold vision shadows a weakness amid lofty goals

Posted on March 26, 2014 |
By Angelo Lynn

Gov. Peter Shumlin’s strength, as witnessed by his Monday visit to Middlebury to speak at a legislative luncheon, is the mile-high clarity through which he sees political challenges.

A corresponding weakness is that he too quickly dismisses the swamps that lie in the weeds of detail between his lofty goals. It’s a trait that transcends issues, from the natural gas pipeline, to health care reform and school governance.

Editorial: Solar power/town aesthetics? It's not an either-or proposition

Posted on March 24, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The Vermont Senate killed a bill on the floor last week, 21-8, that would have provided towns some control over how solar power projects were sited. Among other things, the bill, S.191, sought to require ground-mounted solar installations to comply with the same town zoning and screening requirements as does other commercial development.

Editorial: Petition on town office vote offers additional time for reflection

Posted on March 19, 2014 |
By Angelo Lynn

The petition to reconsider Middlebury’s Town Meeting Day vote on a $7.5 million plan to build a new municipal building and recreation center and create a park on the existing site is to be expected and respectfully considered. Petitions frequently follow controversial, and close, votes.

Guest editorial: Consolidation is a first step

Posted on March 17, 2014 |
By Emerson Lynn

If nothing is done, Vermont lawmakers will approve a seven-cent increase in the statewide property tax rate, which would be the largest increase ever imposed to fund our schools.

That’s not likely. The governor has promised the increase would be less. The House Ways and Means Committee has already proposed a plan that would cut the increase to five cents.
