Recent state budgets have been paying costs forward

Posted on June 3, 2015 |

When Governor Shumlin signed the $616 million transportation bill last week, he punctuated a hallmark of his administration: continued long-term investment in the state’s infrastructure that will lay the foundation for a better economy long after he has left office. The same could be said of gains made in early childhood education, cleaning up Vermont’s waterways and Lake Champlain, investing in renewable energy programs, aggressively addressing the state’s drug crisis and on and on.

The transportation bill is a case in point.

Editorial: Stowe ranked No. 1, but where is Addison County?

Posted on June 1, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

If you missed the recent release of U.S. News and World Report’s rankings of the top high schools across the nation, you missed that Stowe High School was rankedNo. 1 in Vermont and No. 296 in the nation.

You also missed that the rankings considered standardized test scores, college readiness and teacher-student ratios as the criteria for the magazine’s selection. Fifteen high schools in Vermont were ranked as Silver Medal schools. Stowe, with 399 students, was the only Vermont school to receive a Gold-Medal ranking.

Editorial: Bernie Sanders: Restoring the American dream

Posted on May 27, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The intensity was there. The spark was there. The bombastic political rhetoric has never left. But at the moment Bernie Sanders stepped up to the podium late Tuesday afternoon to announce his candidacy for the president of the United States, there was something new: His voice cracked and his demeanor softened as he humbly and graciously thanked all those in the crowd and throughout Vermont’s largest city for their 44 years of support.

Editorial: BLSG misses mark, but is there a silver lining for insect control district?

Posted on May 21, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Without a doubt, life forces have conspired against the Brandon-Leicester-Salisbury-Goshen Insect Control District’s efforts to control the first hatch of mosquitos this spring. The weather created a perform storm for breeding; the Lemon Fair district’s plane was no longer in use to drop larvacide in the region’s expansive swamps; and a change in spraying practices was mandated by the state.

Consequently, it’s bad out there; as bad as it’s been for a decade — maybe longer.

Editorial: Legislature wraps up with impressive scorecard

Posted on May 18, 2015 |
By Angelo Lynn

It wasn’t pretty, but at the end of the day, this Legislature and the Shumlin administration passed a couple major pieces of legislation, and overcame several significant budget hurdles in crafting a reasonable budget in tough times.

The major legislation focused on cleaning up the state’s waterways (particularly Lake Champlain) and passing a major reform of school governance and cost containment. Both pieces of legislation were introduced early in the session, were thoroughly discussed and rehashed over and over, before being passed by large majorities.

Editorial: A salute to steps forward in the legislature

Posted on May 14, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The Shumlin Administration and the Vermont Legislature certainly have had their low points this session, starting with the governor abandoning his health care reform initiative and now being on the verge of scuttling the Vermont Health Exchange, as well as struggling to find ways to bridge a $130-plus million budget gap, but we’d be remiss not to note the few high points of the session, and to recognize the positive steps taken that move us forward.

Here are a few bills passed recently that will serve Vermont well.

Editorial: Solar misfire; scrap it, try again

Posted on May 10, 2015 |

Robert Kennedy Jr. continued his nationwide anti-vaccine tour with a stopover in Vermont this Tuesday, spreading his campaign of misinformation and misguided claims that the Centers for Disease Control was corrupt and in the hip pocket of “big pharma.” A Vermont-based anti-vaccine group sponsored Kennedy’s visit to Montpelier, paying for his flight and expenses in a last-minute effort to dissuade the Legislature from cutting out the philosophical exemption that currently allows parents to avoid school-mandated vaccinations when children enter kindergarten.

Editorial: Taxes and state priorities

Posted on May 3, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Hundreds of Vermonters from across the state have apparently deluged state senators with the message not to tax their TV, apparently because they think their television service is an essential item and they couldn’t possibly afford any increase in rates.

Hundreds more have argued against extending the sales tax to soda, candy and bottled water, and major lobbying groups have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars opposing the initiative.
