Editorial: Open primaries: GOP sees threat; Dems eye ‘bigger tent’

In the aftermath of the New York Republican primary, Democrats and Republicans are looking for future reforms in very different ways. For establishment Republicans, the party is trying to reduce the opportunity for non-party voters to participate, while among Democrats a growing number are considering the prospect of opening their primaries to independents.

Editorial: The Big Apple speaks, but here's how Bernie still wins

Posted on April 21, 2016 |
By Angelo Lynn

In the Democratic presidential primary, New York was a turning point for Hillary Clinton not only because it reversed the string of eight wins by the unexpectedly popular Sen. Bernie Sanders, but because she will enter the convention in July with a solid majority of delegates, as well as the bulk of the Super-delegates. There will likely be, in other words, little doubt as to which candidate has won the most state contests, the most delegates, and a solid majority of the popular vote by the time the convention convenes.

Editorial: Public outrage puts primary system in the crosshairs

That Americans are upset with the way delegates are counted in each party’s presidential primaries might be one of the understatements of the year. Voters are livid, and rightfully so. After all, when a candidate wins 55 percent of the vote in a state and splits the delegates equally, voters supporting the winner should be surprised, if not outraged. That is the case with Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., when he took Wyoming by that margin last Saturday and yet basically split the delegate allocation with rival Hillary Clinton.

Editorial: Act 46 and school choice: What's real vs. 'the clamor'

Statewide, about 80 percent of our children live in communities that educate their children in schools that they operate at all grade levels. These schools include small town elementary schools, and both town-based high schools and larger union high schools. These larger union schools — like Rivendell, CVU and North Country — were created when smaller communities came together to provide greater opportunities for their children.

Editorial: No smoking until you're 21? It's logical, but let's first define personal responsibility

Posted on April 7, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Let’s define adulthood and just what it means in the context of legislative law.

Under most definitions of the law, at 18-years-olds are considered adults. You can legally marry; join the military and go off to war; many banks will allow you to get a loan to buy a house or other major purchases, like buying a car (if you have adequate equity and income); and, at present, you can smoke cigarettes.

Editorial: Why are special ed needs so high? We don't know

By Emerson Lynn

Vermont, we are told, has the nation’s highest per-capita rate of students who receive special education services because of emotional needs. The reasons vary, but they include things like poverty, substance abuse and homelessness.

When you talk to educators, they will tell you they have never seen things as bad as they are now, and they are referring to classroom behavior, which is a reflection of what the students experience at home.

In a keynote speech Monday night honoring the winner of a journalistic prize for investigative reporting, President Barack Obama used the occasion to encourage the media to rise to “higher aspirations” in its political coverage, while lamenting the “divisive and vulgar” state of American politics.

Editorial: Bernie's delegate math

Posted on March 28, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

In the Democratic presidential primary, Sen. Bernie Sanders won 128 delegates in the past six states holding either a primary or caucus, compared to 75 delegates for Sen. Hillary Clinton. And that includes Clinton’s much-ballyhooed win of Arizona. Arizona did have the most delegates at stake in the March 22 primary election, but of those 74 delegates, Bernie won 30.
