Posted on September 4, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The story of Bristol police busting a sizable drug operation last Friday offers several teachable moments to the general community.

First, it costs money to be vigilant 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Support the police to the level that is appropriate within your community.

Editorial: Micro-grids are a revolution coming

Posted on September 4, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The most exciting news story of the week was the announcement by Mary Powell, president and CEO of Green Mountain Power, that the utility and NRG Energy, Inc. of New Jersey were partnering to test the viability of micro-grids in Vermont. The idea is the type of revolutionary thinking that could provide long-term energy security at a local, regional and national level, while also improving long-term political and economic stability.

Editorial: Taking time to see a forest amidst a gaggle of trees

Posted on August 28, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The saying, “You can’t see the forest for the trees,” can be an apt metaphor for how easily we succumb to the routine and miss what is right in front of our eyes. An anecdote is to leave for a couple of weeks, return, and view our surroundings with a fresh perspective.

Guest editorial: Why would we cut tax credits for job creation?

Posted on August 22, 2014 |
By Emerson Lynn

Effective Jan. 1, 2014, the tax credit allowed Vermont businesses for research and development was cut from 30 percent to 27 percent of the federal credit. Included in the legislation is also the requirement that the state tax department publish the names of all those who avail themselves of the reduced tax credit.

Editorial: It's more than the money

Posted on August 18, 2014 |
By Christopher Flavelle

To judge by this summer’s banner policy proposals, the most important question for higher-education reform right now is giving students easier access to loans. But evidence from Canada suggests those changes won’t address the greater need: Getting more kids from poor families into college, the key to moving up in an increasingly unequal society.

Editorial: Doug Racine's ouster and the lessons learned

Posted on August 14, 2014 |
By Emerson Lynn

When the head of a state agency is fired, the reasons for the dismissal should be required reading for other agency heads and potential successors. That is particularly true in the case of ousted Agency of Human Services Secretary Doug Racine.

Guest Editorial: The 'new normal' or is it Vermont's denial?

Posted on August 11, 2014 |
By Emerson Lynn

It’s being called the new normal. Our unemployment rate is near full employment, the economy, while not robust, still trudges forward, real estate prices are edging upward — but the state’s budget is forever in the red.

We can’t seem to get ahead.

The next budget year continues the trend. The Shumlin administration has asked each of its agencies to submit a budget that reflects a 4 percent cut — totaling roughly $31 million.
