Editorial: Bernie's not-so-bad Tuesday

Posted on March 3, 2016 |
By Angelo Lynn

America, Feel the Bern.

Hillary, certainly, is feeling the heat. Consider that if Sen. Sanders had collected an additional half percentage point in Massachusetts he would have won five primaries to Clinton’s six on a day that heavily favored Clinton’s strongest base of support. But for that half percentage point, the headlines would have been dramatically different.

Editorial: Revolution in our schools?

Posted on March 3, 2016 |
By Angelo Lynn

While Vermont’s junior senator Bernie Sanders is proclaiming a political revolution in his race for the Democratic presidential nomination, a quieter revolution is underway within Vermont’s schools. Act 46, passed last spring, is changing how our schools operate, hopefully for the better. The first step is unified governance, which was recently embraced by three area school districts, but that could be just the tip of the iceberg.

One perspective of that story can be viewed through the lens of the Leicester Elementary School.

Editorial: Why cast a vote for Bernie?

Posted on February 29, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Why cast a vote for Bernie?

On Tuesday, Vermonters will not only cast ballots on local budgets and candidates, but for a presidential nominee of either the Republican or Democratic parties. For those choosing to vote in the Democratic primary, here’s why we’re voting for Vermont’s junior Senator, Bernie Sanders.

He is fighting the right fights:

• Bernie has led the national discussion on income inequality and will continue to do so.

Editorial: Act 46: Vote 'yes' to unify

Posted on February 25, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

As Town Meeting nears, one issue tops all others in Addison County — the unification of the three school districts (ACSU, ANwSU, and ANeSU.) At issue is whether school governance continues to be ruled by separate school boards for each elementary, union high and supervisory union (meaning 9 separate boards for ACSU, for example) or a single unified board for each district.

The pros and cons have been discussed before in this space, as well as through numerous letters to the editor and guest commentaries. (See several more letters in today’s issue.)

Editorial: Independent wins 18 awards, including top newspaper honor; plus 14 others for sister publications

Posted on February 22, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

“Ah shucks,” said the sheepish lion to the Wizard of Oz upon receiving his badge of courage, “I’m speechless.”

While not speechless, we are certainly honored. Our OZ was the annual New England Newspaper Press Association awards convention held in Boston this past Friday and Saturday during which we took home 18 awards at the Addison Independent. Of those 18, an unprecedented (for us) eight were for first, six seconds, and four thirds.

Editorial: To unite or go solo is the thrust of an imperfect bill

Posted on February 18, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

As voters across Vermont consider the ramifications of Act 46, the bill that is encouraging school districts to consolidate governance, the first point to concede is that the legislation is not perfect. The second concession to realize is that no proposed legislation would ever be.

What we are dealing with is the art of the possible, and working toward an improved and viable education system one step at a time.

Editorial: Change at the Supreme Court

Posted on February 15, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The news of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s death this Saturday comes on the heels of a decision last week by the U.S. Supreme Court to block the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan, which had sought to reduce the nation’s carbon pollution largely by targeting coal-fired power plants. The EPA plan had been opposed by 23 states who sought to stop the plan, but their appeal was denied by the liberal Circuit Court in Washington, D.C.

Editorial: Broadening Bernie's message

Posted on February 10, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

NPR posted two telling photos of the winning presidential candidates in Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary. Democrat Bernie Sanders was pictured with his right arm held high overhead with a clinched fist, lips closed tight and a determined look that the fight he has fought his entire life had begun on a national level. It was not a look that reflected triumph, but rather a realization that he had earned the chance to pursue his sense of economic justice on a national stage.

Editorial: Komline's beef with sick leave is all politics, not defending small business

Posted on February 8, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Of the issues facing Vermont’s Legislature this session, the opposition to a modest paid sick leave bill for Vermont businesses has been overplayed by a handful of Republicans seeking to “protect” small businesses against the rule of big government.
