Editorial: How smart jokes fool the unwary

Posted on March 15, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Here’s a joke circulating on the Internet that prompts a laugh, rings true to some Americans, but is also disconcerting.

It goes like this:

“A cowboy named Bud was overseeing his herd in a remote mountainous pasture in Montana when suddenly a brand-new BMW advanced toward him out of a cloud of dust. The driver, a young man in a Brioni suit, Gucci shoes, RayBan sunglasses and YSL tie, leaned out the window and asked the cowboy, ‘If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, will you give me a calf?’

Editorial, Middlebury taxes: A tipping point?

Posted on March 12, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

With foresight, faith and determination, Middlebury voters approved adding a penny on the tax rate for the next five years to initiate a Middlebury Business Development Fund in the hopes of, as the slogan said, creating “good jobs close to home.” Voters also OK’d renovating the fire stations at a cost of $4.65 million, or about 4.5 cents on the tax rate. While other town expenses were held to a minimum, town residents and the business community still face an intimidating property tax bill.

Middlebury's development fund puts the onus on advocates

Posted on March 8, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Passage of the Middlebury Business Development Fund, 125-64, at Middlebury’s Town Meeting, presents a double-edged sword for ardent proponents: the promise of success and the prospect of failure.

With thanks to John Tenny

Posted on March 8, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Each year across the county’s 23 towns, a few local “heroes” are honored for service to their communities “beyond the call of duty” or, to put it another way, way beyond what most of us could imagine doing ourselves. So, we offer our sincere thanks and tip our collective hats to them for their magnanimous efforts.

Guest Editorial: High cost of corrections cannot be sustained for such little benefit

Posted on March 5, 2012 |
By Bill Schubart

The most expensive service our government provides to its citizens, other than heroic healthcare in Medicare, Medicaid and the VA, is to lock them up.

According to the Bureau of Prisons, the annual average cost per prisoner in 2008 was $26,000 at the federal level and $24,000 at the local level. Small states like Rhode Island and Vermont estimate their costs much higher, about $35-$45,000 a year. This is two to three times our per-pupil cost for public education.

Two truths are all too often overshadowed in today's political discourse: Public service is a most honorable pursuit, and so is bipartisanship.

Editorial: Town Meeting: Our views on three votes; you do the rest

Posted on March 1, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Next Tuesday, March 6 is Town Meeting Day. Don’t take it lightly.

In today’s Addison Independent, the news team has reviewed the major — and minor — issues to be discussed at town meeting of each of the 23 towns in the county, plus Brandon. The previews start on Page 12A and continue through Page 20A. We wouldn’t devote eight pages of news to the reviews, if we didn’t think the issues were important and wanted to provide citizens with a shorthand guide to each town.

Editorial: MUHS Nordic girls: Impressive!

Posted on March 1, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

In the midst of news surrounding Town Meeting, the presidential primaries, the Dow cruising over 13,000, North Korea agreeing to cut back on its testing of nuclear weapons, and the continuing threat of war with Iran by the same neoconservatives that pushed us unnecessarily into a war with Iraq, let’s pause for a moment to applaud a local milestone: the MUHS Nordic girls’ ski team won the D-II state championship this week.

It was the first state championship of any MUHS Nordic ski team since 1989.

It’s a special achievement for several reasons:

Time outdoors builds character

Posted on March 1, 2012 |
By Matt Dickerson

My 22-year-old nephew Michael is both philosophical and artistic in nature. I describe him as contemplative and creative. He has also spent essentially his whole life within a short drive of mountains and trout streams. He has lived with his family in Colorado, Maine, western North Carolina and Alaska. He spent three years in Addison County at Middlebury College and another year studying abroad in mountainous Chile.
