VERGENNES — Two Vergennes Police Department members, one Vermont State Police trooper from the New Haven barracks and two police canines from those agencies are set to make cameos on this week’s episode of “Golden Boy,” a CBS show that debuted in February.

Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel and his dog, Akido; Vermont State Police Sgt. Eugene Duplissis and his canine, Argus; and Vergennes detective Jason Ouellette were all invited to New York City in October to film brief appearances in the show.

No candidate wants to embrace a national unemployment rate of 8.3 percent and suggest it is an accomplishment of a president’s first four years in office. On the other hand, it is imperative the president remind the nation how far the economy had fallen in the aftermath of President George W. Bush’s policies, explain the depth of the Great Recession and the underlying reasons that prompted it, and promote how current policies are producing slow but steady improvement.

Those numbers don’t lie.

Clippings: Young voters have town meeting duty

On Monday evening, I asked a friend if she’d stopped by the town meeting in Middlebury.

Clippings: What we have, others value highly

Vermont’s Town Meeting Day tradition, with one of the purest forms of democratic rule, falls in the midst of turbulent upheaval throughout Northern Africa and the Middle East and should prompt deep appreciation for what too many Vermonters take for granted.

The warm breeze and bright sunlight came as an unfamiliar surprise to county residents, who, upon stepping outside, squinted skyward and blinked, disoriented, much like Punxsutawney Phil on Groundhog Day, but without the media attention. Was it time to wake up?
