ANeSU to bring in a mediator; board hopes to improve climate

BRISTOL — The Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Executive Committee at a special meeting Thursday pledged to address what it characterized as a “deteriorated environment” in the district’s six schools.

“The committee recognizes the need for an immediate assessment of current conditions,” the committee said in a prepared statement.

Pocock music festival to take hiatus until 2016

BRISTOL — Pocock Rocks, Bristol’s annual summer music festival on Main Street, will not happen this year, but organizers said it will make a triumphant return in 2016.

The Bristol Downtown Community Partnership, the principal organizer of the event, decided not to hold Pocock this year because of a lack of resources.

“We didn’t have enough hands to pull it off,” said BDCP board member Darla Senecal, who also serves as Bristol’s recreation director.

Ripton's McKibben earns Truman Scholar award

RIPTON — Ripton resident Sophie McKibben has already drawn a lot of kudos during her young life for her academic prowess and dedication to public service. McKibben’s efforts were recently rewarded in a big way, with her designation as this year’s Truman Scholar for the state of Vermont.

Spring is back; it's time to Green Up!

Goshen gardener welcomes spring

Spring comes gently to Goshen; even now, in late April, the woods are brown and the weather often chilly.

But by early May dainty ephemeral wildflowers — Spring Beauties, Dogs Tooth Violets, Bellwort, Trillium and Dutchman’s Breeches to mention some favorites — will blanket the forest floor as the delicate green veil gradually creeps up the mountainside.

New housing complex in Bristol nearly complete

BRISTOL — Construction crews in Bristol are busy completing a new, 12-unit apartment building on Plank Road.

The property is owned by Stanley Livingston and the project is managed by his company, Meghan’s Meadow View LLC.

The 6,300-square-foot building will have six two-bedroom and six one-bedroom apartments. It is located on a 2.1-acre plot at 7986 Plank Road, the former site of Roy’s Automotive.

Bingham asks for ballot voting on town budget

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard has been asked to pave the way for future municipal budgets to be voted by Australian ballot instead of at the annual town meeting. The request comes just a few weeks after local residents agreed to enact the same voting change for their elementary school spending plan.

Septic system central to Addison's plans

ADDISON — Work has begun to evaluate whether a parcel of land west of Addison Central School could be suitable to host a septic system that might someday serve a renovated Addison Town Hall, the Addison Volunteer Fire Department and the Addison Community Baptist Church.

According to April 7 Addison selectboard minutes, John Spencer, the head of Addison’s Town Hall Committee, told the board that early testing of the land’s septic capacity looks promising.
