Veysey wins a car in annual Lions Club raffle

VERGENNES — Following the Memorial Day festivities, the Vergennes Lions Club drew the winners’ tickets for their 2013 Vehicle Raffle. The winner of the grand price, a Chrysler PT Cruiser convertible, was Katherine Veysey of Addison. The second-prize winner of the Cloud Nine Fishing Charter was Audrey Tucker of Vergennes, and the third-prize winner of the stay at River’s Edge Campground was Lynette Delisle of Vergennes.

Vergennes mayor and others 'jailed' in city Rotary fundraiser

VERGENNES — After being jailed on Park Street for crimes ranging from being loud — that would be Vergennes City Manager Mel Hawley — to impersonating a mayor and allegedly misbehaving in high school — that would be city mayor Bill Benton — a number of Vergennes-area residents on Thursday tapped friends and family members for more than $3,000 to be bailed out.

Those funds were turned over to the Vergennes Rotary Club, which in turn planned to donate the cash to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Vergennes.

Plan forged for new Middlebury town offices, gym with college help

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College has pledged $5.5 million toward a $7.5 million plan that would result in a new downtown municipal building and a new gym that would be located near the Memorial Sports Center off Mary Hogan Drive.

Deal in the works to acquire and raze Middlebury's Lazarus Building

MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury and Middlebury College are working on a deal that would result in the purchase of the so-called Lazarus Building at 20 Main St., a structure that would be razed to provide a wider and safer Printer’s Alley link between the downtown and the Marble Works complex.

BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School bid farewell to the 122 seniors in the class of 2013 on Saturday, with a diverse group of speakers urging the newly minted graduates to have fun, make the world a better place, remain inquisitive and to return to Vermont someday.

Otter Valley graduates cheer their accomplishments

BRANDON — Kirstyn Simonds was clear when asked how she felt about graduating from Otter Valley Union High School before the commencement ceremony this past Saturday morning.

“I don’t want to grow up,” she said with a nervous laugh.

Nevertheless, Simonds will attend Castleton State College in the fall with the goal of becoming an elementary school teacher, a vocation sure to keep her young.

MUHS student leaders urge peers to connect, excell

MIDDLEBURY — Spirits were high on Saturday morning as the Middlebury Union High School class of 2013 gathered together at the Memorial Sports Center to graduate. The commencement ceremony, which featured a mix of tradition and originality, started with droning bagpipes, played by senior Duncan Mathewson, leading the teachers to their seats. Afterward the graduating class was called in by Edward Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance,” played by the MUHS band.

Vergennes narrowly OKs smoking ban

VERGENNES — A new policy in Vergennes asks residents and visitors not to smoke or chew tobacco on the city’s downtown green or at the city pool or surrounding recreation area.

By a 4-3 vote on Tuesday, Vergennes aldermen approved a policy that will also ask people not to use tobacco during city-sponsored events in the Vergennes parks in the Otter Creek basin, including at the annual Youth Fishing Derby.

Needles found in the Hub septic tank

BRISTOL — Last week’s cleaning of the septic system on the Bristol Recreation Field raised eyebrows when workers found many condoms and what town officials were told were at least five hypodermic needles in waste pumped from a separate tank belonging to the Hub Teen Center.

Workers informed Recreation Club officials, who in turn brought the findings to town administrator Bill Bryant, the recreation department, the police department and the staff of the Hub.

The Recreation Club also wrote a letter asking Hub officials to address the situation.
