Author Rick Bass schools writers in environmental activism

RIPTON — Acclaimed writer and activist Rick Bass sparked a lively discussion about activism, the environment, and the justice system when he gave a lecture titled “The Joy of Being Arrested” at Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf campus this past Thursday morning.

Bass told the story of being arrested when he zip-tied himself to the gates of the White House to protest the Keystone XL pipeline the day after President Obama’s State of the Union address in February 2013.

Cultivating scents: Gardening for the nose

Last week an unexpected package was delivered to our doorstep. As I carefully began to unwrap it, a mesmerizing fragrance spread through the room. And there, nestled between layers of damp newspaper, I discovered a delightful gift from a gardening friend — two Star Jasmine plants (Trachelospemum jasminoides) direct from a specialty nursery in Raleigh, N.C., where she lives.

Chamber golf tourney to honor Schildkamp

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Chamber of Commerce will host its 20th annual Scholarship Golf Tournament on Friday, June 27, at Middlebury College’s Ralph Myhre Golf Course. Participants will enjoy 18 holes of golf and an awards barbecue during which the 2014 scholarship recipient, Matthew Schildkamp, will be recognized.

The tournament features the chance to win a new Jeep Grand Cherokee for a hole-in-one, and one person will putt for $2,500.

Regional Planning Commission declines to reconsider pipeline endorsement

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Regional Planning Commission (ACRPC) on Wednesday, June 11, narrowly rejected a request from the town of Cornwall that the panel rescind its earlier vote indicating a majority opinion that Vermont Gas’s proposed Phase II pipeline could comply with the county’s regional plan.

At VUHS, 89 graduate with songs and speeches

VERGENNES — This past Friday night, family, friends and community members packed into the hot and sweaty Vergennes Union High School gymnasium to celebrate the graduation of 89 students.

In the class of 2014, eight students graduated with honors, 10 belonged to the National Honor Society, and nine were members of the National Technical or Arts honor societies.

Monkton aide wrapping up 39-year love affair with her job

MONKTON — Lillian “Lil” Cota thought she was headed for a normal day at Monkton Central School on Tuesday. But the 39-year veteran instructional aide was in for quite the surprise when she arrived in the school’s gymnasium to a luncheon in her honor.

Relatives and colleagues of Cota, who is retiring at the end of this year, came to honor Cota for her service — and present her with an enormous strawberry cake.

After the celebration, the still-teary-eyed Cota sat down with the Independent to talk about her long career.
