Weybridge charter change pitched

Posted on February 5, 2015 |
By Addison Independent

WEYBRIDGE — Weybridge officials are proposing to change the municipality’s charter in a manner that would allow for its town clerk and treasurer to be appointed by the selectboard, rather than elected by the public.

This means that the person or people taking these positions would no longer have to reside in the town of Weybridge and would be appointed by the selectboard. Panton approved a similar charter change last year.

By Addison Independent

Slot Canyon presentation.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Rich and Sheri Larsen will present “Exploring the Slot Canyons of Southern Utah” on Thursday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m. at Ilsley Library in Middlebury.

Southern Utah is a stark and wildly beautiful land of sandstone carved into countless canyons, ranging in size from Colorado River canyons to slots so tight a person cannot fit through. The Larsens, often with accomplices from Vermont and other states, have now made a dozen trips to Utah to play in slot canyons.

Legislative Review: Sen. Claire Ayer pledges to review proposed gun law

Posted on February 5, 2015 |
By Sen. Claire Ayer

Ayer.jpg

OPINION:

What about the gun bill, S.31?

There’s been some speculation on Front Porch Forum regarding my motives for co-sponsoring a bill that does three things: It puts Vermont in compliance with the federal law that requires Vermont to enter into a federal database (1) the names of certain violent felons and (2) the names of persons who have been judged in a court of law to be a danger to themselves or others. The third thing it does is require a background check during the sale of all weapons, while allowing for family members to gift guns to each other.

VTrans planning for Middlebury roundabout

Posted on February 2, 2015 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Agency of Transportation has officially added a proposed Route 7/Exchange Street roundabout to its list of priority projects and is now determining the price tag of such an undertaking and how it would be paid for.

The Middlebury selectboard has been lobbying VTrans since 2004 to install a roundabout at that intersection north of the village.

Low prices affect fuel dealers

Posted on February 2, 2015 |
By Evan Johnson

ADDISON COUNTY — Oil prices are subject to change. If anyone knows this, it’s Tom Jackman, owner of Jackman Fuels Inc. in Vergennes. His grandfather started the company in Bristol in the 1930s and he still has receipts from years ago when the price of oil was 13 cents per gallon.

“Then, it was a big deal if it went up to 14 cents in a year,” he said. “In 2008, we were seeing increases of 40 cents overnight.”

Middlebury OKs new vehicle for police department

Posted on February 2, 2015 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — At their meeting this past Tuesday, members of the Middlebury selectboard agreed to spend $23,468 for a Ford Interceptor utility vehicle for the Middlebury Police Department. Middlebury police Chief Tom Hanley said the vehicle will offer more versatility and comfort than a conventional cruiser.

The vendor, G. Stone Motors of Middlebury, is accepting in trade (for $5,200) a 2010 cruiser from the department as part of the deal, according to Hanley.

In other action at that Jan. 27 meeting, the selectboard:

Platform tennis: Dark, cold and a whole lot of fun

Posted on February 2, 2015 |
By Christy Lynn

Paddleball3637.jpg

Platform tennis is an unusual sport because it seems that those who have been exposed to it quickly become obsessed; everyone else has never heard of it.

The rules of the game are much like doubles tennis and the court looks very similar, albeit about a third the size of a tennis court and built on a platform (hence the name) with 12-foot-tall walls that come up on all sides made out of chicken wire fencing that is held in high tension so that players can hit the ball as it bounces off the wire (similar to racquetball or squash).
