E. Middlebury passes river petition

EAST MIDDLEBURY — More than 100 Middlebury residents have signed a petition that urges local, state and federal governments to cooperatively get the wheels turning on a mitigation project to prevent future flooding on an East Middlebury stretch of the Middlebury River.

Town gears up for energy savings

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials are working with Central Vermont Public Service Corp. (CVPS) and Efficiency Vermont to replace around 470 light fixtures throughout town with a more energy-efficient variety that could save the community around $20,000 per year on its electricity bill.

After explosion, Otter Creek brews again

MIDDLEBURY — As sirens sped toward Otter Creek Brewing of Exchange Street Monday morning, hundreds of gallons of amber-colored beer soaked slowly into the earth.

It might seem like a scene from a beer-lover’s nightmare, but the 40-barrel fermenting tank that exploded inside the Middlebury brewery around 10 a.m. was no figment of the imagination. The explosion damaged pipes and another tank, blowing out an outside wall panel and dumping beer across the brewery floor and the parking lot outside.

Update 11/15/11, 3 p.m.: Vermont Public Radio reports that normal brewing operations resumed at the Middlebury factory on Tuesday afternoon.

A beer tank at Otter Creek Brewing exploded around 10 a.m. on Monday, according to Middlebury fire chief Rick Cole.

Survey examines sex, drug and health risks to local teens

ADDISON COUNTY — How many local teenagers drink and drive? How many Addison County high school students have had sex? Of that number, what percentage used a condom? Do middle school students really consider suicide?

These are just some of the questions that a statewide risk survey has sought to answer for more than a decade.

By all accounts, Addison County boasts a veritable goldmine of creativity in the food, agriculture and forestry arenas — the so-called “working landscape.”

Boardman marks 100th birthday

MIDDLEBURY — Frances Boardman was in charge of baking the cake for just about every one of her family members’ birthdays until a fall — ironically, in the kitchen — forced her to retire her pots and pans around two years ago.

Well, Boardman will be celebrating her own birthday on Monday, Nov. 14, and someone else is in charge of the cake.

And they’d better bring a lot of candles.

College hosts China Town Hall for the community

MIDDLEBURY — Since 1978, when Chinese Communist Party Chairman Deng Xiaoping instituted the market-friendly “Reform and Opening Up Policy,” more than 300 million Chinese have climbed out of poverty. Today, China touts the world’s second-largest economy and has become the world’s leading manufacturer in terms of output, knocking the U.S. from its 110-year reign on that podium.
