Bristol selectboard fishes for project bids and grants

BRISTOL — At an April 25 meeting, the Bristol selectboard moved ahead with a Bristol Conservation Commission plan to build a handicap accessible fishing platform at Eagle Park, located upstream from the New Haven River’s Bartlett Falls off Lincoln Road.

Vergennes Farmers' Market to open with more vendors

VERGENNES — The growing Vergennes Farmers’ Market will make its 2011 debut on Thursday on the city’s downtown green with an expanded variety of local fresh produce, flowers and even crafts.

The market will open earlier this year than in the past, said coordinator Rhonda Williams, and will run from 3:30 to 6 p.m. on Thursdays through the fall.

WEST ADDISON — When the Champlain Bridge closed on Oct. 16, 2009, Crown Point resident Jean Breed found herself among the legions of New Yorkers lining up at 4:30 a.m. for the For tTi Ferry, or driving 1,000 miles a week through Whitehall, N.Y., to get to her job at Goodrich Corp. in Vergennes.

Local woman leads effort to buy Waterfront movies

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County resident Jeanne Montross is organizing an effort to acquire the movie inventory from Waterfront Video’s Middlebury store.

Waterfront Video recently announced it was closing its Middlebury store. Managers had announced a movie sale to the general public during the month of May, but Montross — with others — hopes to pull off a bulk purchase of the store’s more than 16,000 titles and eventually make them available for loan to the community.

Lake Champlain hits record high levels; roads and ferries affected

ADDISON COUNTY — On Thursday, county residents bordering on Lake Champlain watched with bated breath as lake levels climbed to record-breaking heights.

As of 4:30 p.m. April 28, lake levels had topped out at 102.24 feet above sea level, then begun to slowly decline. The levels were far above flood stage, which is set at 100 feet, and they had already bested the previous record height of 102.1 feet, which was set in 1869.

Health care reform bill clears Senate

MIDDLEBURY — Sen. Claire Ayer, D-Weybridge, received a lot of feedback on Tuesday in wake of the Senate’s passage, by a 21-9 vote, of a bill that lays the foundation for a single-payer health care system in Vermont.

But perhaps none of the feedback touched her as much as a message she got from the parents of her new grandchild, who turned two years old this week.

Actor finds local link to story of 'King and I'

MIDDLEBURY — When Jennifer Wagner auditioned for a role in “The King and I” with the Middlebury Community Players, she never expected to find that the musical about a British woman in 19th century Siam had local historical connections.

But a chance trip to Manchester earlier in April brought the play, which on Thursday begins a two-week run at Town Hall Theater, a little closer to home. In Manchester, she stumbled upon the tombstones of Shoreham natives Asa and Lucia Hemenway, who served as missionaries to Siam (now Thailand) between 1839 and 1850.

Towns beginning to gear up for Green Up

ADDISON COUNTY / BRANDON — As thousands of people pitch in to clear trash off of Vermont roadsides on Saturday, May 7, they will be observing a Green Up Day tradition established by Gov. Deane Davis in 1970.

After members of each community package litter into Green Up bags for pick-up along newly clean roadsides, towns across the county will observe the 31st annual spring-cleaning event with cookouts, community dinners and raffles.

City council mulls funding source, site for police station

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday took another step toward a new police station, and heard for the first time a suggestion on how to pay for it without raising taxes.

Aldermen unanimously voted to ask City Manager Mel Hawley to study building a new station on city-owned land off Green Street, and they heard Hawley cite the Tower Fund as a way to pay for it.

Police, apartment managers face surge in Middlebury drug crimes

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police and managers of several local affordable housing developments are joining forces to fight what they say has been a recent surge in illegal drug activity.

Middlebury officials specifically identified John Graham Court as a neighborhood in which some residents — particularly young families — have been complaining about drug transactions.
