City council is considering sewer line into Ferrisburgh

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday, for the first time in years, reached a consensus to extend city sewer lines into neighboring Ferrisburgh to serve a private business.

Denecker Chevrolet owner Tom Denecker, who has talked about sewer lines with Vergennes and Ferrisburgh officials many times in recent years, approached City Manager Mel Hawley on Tuesday and asked to be added to the evening agenda.

Police say Leicester man shot neighbor, two troopers

LEICESTER — A Leicester man could face life in prison if he is found guilty of shooting his neighbor and two Vermont State Police troopers in an incident early Sunday morning.

Timothy Foley, 47, refused to appear at his arraignment in Rutland Superior Court, criminal division, Monday afternoon, and a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf to two charges of attempted murder and two charges of aggravated attempted murder.

Plays to 'pop-up' overnight at THT as playwrights, actors face a deadline

MIDDLEBURY — The term “pop-up” was once confined to describing three-dimensional artwork in storybooks. It’s now being applied to spontaneous gatherings that bring attention to products, causes or activities — such as pop-up stores or concerts.

Bixby makes changes to boost outreach to towns

VERGENNES — The support the Bixby Free Memorial Library received on Town Meeting Day came on the heels of a new librarian arriving, and Bixby officials are optimistic that financial backing, the new hire and new job descriptions emphasizing outreach mean the library can play a larger role in area residents’ lives.

Library Director Jane Spencer said the Bixby board and librarians would continue to make increasing and improving library services their central mission in the years to come.

Uncertain future seen for shoreland, water quality bills

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Legislature is currently debating two bills aimed at protecting the state’s waterways. One seeks to regulate shoreline development while the other hopes to reduce the amount of phosphorus dumped into Lake Champlain and other waterways.

SHORELANDS BILL

The shorelands bill, H.526, would set standards for development of Vermont’s lakes and watersheds.

Middlebury town office bond revote set for May 13

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday set a reconsideration vote for the $6.5 million town offices-recreation center project for Tuesday, May 13. That Australian ballot vote will be preceded by an informational meeting on Monday, May 12, at 7 p.m. in the municipal gym.

RNeSU chief to leave for Newport

BRANDON — Rutland Northeast Superintendent John Castle is heading home.

The 49-year-old is leaving RNeSU in June for Newport’s North Country Supervisory Union, which encompasses Castle’s hometown. He will take the superintendent reins from Robert Kern, who is retiring after seven years.

Castle relocated from his hometown of Holland, Vt., five years ago to become the superintendent at RNeSU after longtime supervisory union head Bill Mathis retired in 2009.

Officer shortage poses problem in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury’s rigorous standards for selecting and training its part-time police officers has placed the department in somewhat of a personnel pickle, according to its chief, and also stretched its budget.

Once trained, said Middlebury Police Chief Tom Hanley, the part-time officers are being wooed by other law enforcement agencies to fill fulltime positions, to the extent that the Middlebury force currently has no part-timers on its roster of 14 officers.

Toddler hit by SUV is recovering; family seeks financial aid

MIDDLEBURY — Two-and-a-half-year-old Charlotte LaFayette McConnell is making stellar progress in her recovery from injuries sustained after being struck by an SUV on Weybridge Street on April 1, and a fundraising effort launched on her behalf had yielded more than $13,000 as the Addison Independent went to press on Wednesday.
