College student running for Vt. House seat

MIDDLEBURY — Calvin McEathron should be pretty well set up to pursue a career as a politician if he successfully earns a bachelor’s degree in political science and economics from Middlebury College in 2016.

But McEathron, a 20-year-old sophomore, doesn’t plan on waiting another two years before making his mark in the legislative arena. The East Montpelier native confirmed on Tuesday he plans to run for one of Middlebury’s two seats in the Vermont House, a campaign he will pursue as an independent.

Bernie rallies Vermonters agains economic inequality

MIDDLEBURY — “Of all the issues facing our country, the issue of wealth inequality is the most profound,” U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders told an audience of more than a hundred people at the Middlebury Union High School auditorium, and many more around the state via teleconference on March 30.

The crowds of Vermonters had come out on a Sunday morning to hear the second-term Independent senator deliver some memorable messages regarding economic disparity in this country that, though familiar, still found a receptive audience.

Kunin and Musick: The politician & the artist share the stage

MIDDLEBURY — Environmental artist Pat Musick and Vermont stateswoman Madeleine Kunin come from fairly different worlds.

Musick of Manchester has a successful career that spans 40 years, in which she has created installations and exhibits all over the United States. Kunin served as lieutenant governor of Vermont from 1978 to 1982, governor from 1985 to 1991, and ambassador to Switzerland in the ’90s; she is now a professor at large at the University of Vermont.

Police arrest five in Bristol armed robbery, burglary

BRISTOL — Police made a slew of arrests in connection with two thefts in Bristol over the weekend, including a brazen armed robbery of a Route 116 South convenience store.

In total, police took into custody five people: one on suspicion of committing the armed robbery, the same man and one other on suspicion of breaking into a home, and three others helping plan and carry out the armed robbery.

Toddler struck by SUV in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY— A two-and-a-half-year-old girl remained in critical condition at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center on Wednesday after being struck by an SUV on Weybridge Street at around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1.

Community Forum: ID-4 voters to gather April 9

Brandon man cited with setting his own house afire

BRANDON — On Monday evening Vermont State Police cited Ethan McArdle, 33, of Brandon for first-degree arson and reckless endangerment. Police said McArdle started a fire at his Carver Street home in Brandon that morning.

At approximately 8:49 a.m. on March 31 the Brandon Fire Department responded to a reported fire at 59 Carver St. The Pittsford Fire Department also responded to the fire. Upon arrival firefighters found heavy fire on the second floor and additional fire on the first floor.

Buck kill is up 8 percent in 2013 Vermont deer season

MONTPELIER — Hunters took 14,107 deer during Vermont’s four deer hunting seasons in 2013, according to a report on last year’s hunting success released March 20 by the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department. 

The number of legal bucks with at least two points on one antler totaled 8,831, up 8 percent from the year before.
