Liability at issue for wet city basements

VERGENNES — At the Aug. 23 Vergennes City Council meeting, Vergennes officials told two of the several Crosby Farms homeowners whose basements were flooded in April and May that nothing could be done until the insurance liability for the events could be worked out.

Homeowners Jeffrey and Carrie Tarte, who attended the meeting, and City Manager Mel Hawley told the council they have talked regularly about the incidents.

Panton to discuss town plan Thursday

PANTON — What should be the last public step in adopting Panton’s new town plan comes on Thursday, when the Addison County Regional Planning Commission will hold its required hearing on the document at Panton Town Hall. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.

The proposed plan has already successfully navigated planning commission and selectboard hearings, and the selectboard adopted the plan earlier this summer.

City's first year owning pool smooth

VERGENNES — City Manager Mel Hawley last week gave aldermen a rosy update on the first full year of city ownership of the Vergennes pool.

At Aug. 23 meeting of the Vergennes City Council, he said he had checked numbers quickly and come up with a pool fund balance of about $6,500.

As crowds watch, two states again linked

ADDISON — After close to two years of separation, the shores of Crown Point, N.Y., and Addison, Vt., were once more connected last Friday when the center arch of the new Lake Champlain bridge was set in place.

And while there’s still a lot more work to be done before the bridge is completed, for the crowds that turned out to watch, the connection between the two states was a symbolic moment.

Pedestrian hit by bus dies

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police confirmed on Thursday the death of the 75-year-old woman who had been struck by an Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) bus at the intersection of Merchants Row and Main Street back on Aug.10.

Ann Curtis Odom, a Washington, D.C., resident, died “during the early morning hours of Aug. 25, 2011, at Fletcher Allen Hospital, as a result of the injuries she sustained in this motor vehicle accident,” read the police press release.

Update: McKibben spends the weekend in D.C. jail cell

Update (8/25/11):

WASHINGTON, D.C. — From where he sits — behind bars in a Washington, D.C., jail cell — everything is going according to plan for Bill McKibben.

The environmental author and activist was arrested on Saturday, Aug. 20, in Washington while protesting the proposed construction of a 1,700-mile pipeline that would pump oil from the Tar Sands of Alberta, Canada, to oil refineries in Texas. He was one of 70 arrests on Saturday.

Ashley steps down from Middlebury selectboard

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Selectwoman Janelle Ashley has stepped down from her post because her family is moving to the town of Whiting.

“I will miss being such a central part of what’s happening in the Middlebury community,” Ashley said on Wednesday as she was packing up belongings at her Middlebury home.

Bristol residents spar over business park

BRISTOL — The future of the Bristol Works business campus hangs in limbo as Bristol town officials grapple with an official zoning classification for the property.

Owners of the property at the corner of Bristol’s Munsill Avenue and Pine Street plan to use the 5.5-acre site to host a range of uses, including office space for the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union, a prospective health center, and manufacturing space for energy technology and value-added food products.
