Omya puts Middlebury rail spur on hold

By Associated Press

MIDDLEBURY (AP) — A proposed $32 million rail spur that would be used to alleviate truck traffic between marble processor Omya Inc.’s quarry in Middlebury and its calcium carbonate plant in Pittsford has been put on hold indefinitely.

Given the sluggish economy and cost of the project, the company and Vermont Rail Systems are not pursuing it, said Omya plant manager Jim Stewart.

Bristol tallies up cost of flood repairs

Posted on August 30, 2012 |
By Andrew Stein

BRISTOL — When Tropical Storm Irene slammed Vermont  a year ago, Bristol wasn’t as badly marred as some Vermont towns. But large sections of several major roads were wiped out, construction projects were taken back to phase one and several old structures were destroyed.

One year later, Bristol Administrator Bill Bryant said the town’s infrastructure and finances are in good shape. He credited the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans), among others, for aiding in the recovery.

ADDISON COUNTY — It’s been one year since Tropical Storm Irene wiped out roads, bridges and buildings throughout Vermont, taxing emergency management systems statewide.

That storm, and the weeks immediately after spent on emergency repairs, helped to get area town officials thinking more about the realities of disaster management, according to Tim Bouton, emergency response planner at the Addison County Regional Planning Commission (ACRPC).

“People are more conscious that there could be a large-scale disaster here,” Bouton said.

GRANVILLE/HANCOCK — These days, business is good at the Old Hancock Hotel, which sits on Route 100 mere yards from the bridge that rising waters swept away on Aug. 28, 2011.

That’s not to say the past year hasn’t been a struggle for Diane Isaacson, who runs the hotel, restaurant and bakery. As Tropical Storm Irene passed through and the rain turned brooks to raging rivers that swept through houses and fields, Isaacson’s basement was inundated, her water and power supply destroyed.

MIDDLEBURY –– Attending college close to home has its ups and downs. One positive, according to two Middlebury Union High School grads who now attend Middlebury College, is saving quarters.

“I can get free laundry,” said Ethan Roy, a 2011 MUHS graduate who attends college a little more than a mile from home.

Roy and MUHS classmate Katie Ritter, both 19, jokingly cited going home for laundry as a plus among many other reasons why they enjoyed going to college in their hometown.

Sorrel carries Addison County in AG primary

ADDISON COUNTY — The race between incumbent William Sorrell and challenger T.J. Donovan for the Democratic Party’s nomination for state attorney general was tight in Addison County, though not as tight as it was in statewide voting Tuesday. And, as in the rest of the state, Sorrell came out the winner.

Local kombucha company expanding in Bristol

Posted on August 30, 2012 |
By Andrew Stein

BRISTOL — When husband-wife duo Jeff Weaber and Katina Martin moved back to Addison County in 2005, Martin — a naturopathic physician — founded Salisbury Natural Family Health the following year.

Weaber, with his years of brewing experience in Oregon, decided to combine his and his wife’s skillsets to create a beverage high in vitamins and probiotic yeast and bacteria: kombucha, a slightly fermented tea first produced in Asia. In the autumn of 2007, the kombucha company Aqua Vitea was born in the basement of Weaber and Martin’s Salisbury home.

Vergennes Day draws throngs

Posted on August 30, 2012 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — With a little help from Mother Nature, the 31st annual Vergennes Day drew a crowd on Saturday to the Little City and ran smoothly, according to city officials and its primary organizer, Marguerite Senecal of the Addison County Chamber of Commerce.

“The day couldn’t have been more tailor-made. It was gorgeous that day,” Senecal said. “And it all went like clockwork.”

Because no tickets are sold, officials have no good way to measure the crowd, which typically numbers in the thousands.
