Middlebury College students launch 'Humans of Vermont' project

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College consistently ranks among the top liberal arts institutions in the U.S., and the college prides itself on fostering a close-knit community of students and faculty on its small campus.

But for seniors Sophie Kligler, Noah Goss-Woliner and Molly Parizeau, this means it is possible for students to go through their studies at Middlebury without learning much about surrounding towns, or meeting regular Vermonters.

“It’s easy to be, especially as a student, stuck in that Middlebury bubble,” Kligler said.

Lincoln moves forward on new town office plan

Posted on January 19, 2015 |
By Zach Despart

LINCOLN — An ad hoc committee of residents appointed by the Lincoln selectboard will meet Wednesday to finalize a recommendation to the board on how to proceed with building a new town office building.

The committee has been working since September on the proposal, and will meet on Jan. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the present town office.

Selectman Bill Finger said the town has had discussions about replacing the 45-year-old town office building since 2009. He said the growth of the town has rendered the structure too small.

MIDDLEBURY — People looking for homes in and around Middlebury overwhelmingly prefer single-family residences, and many believe there is not a good inventory of their favorite type of housing in Addison County’s shire town.

Those were some of the findings of a recent housing survey by Middlebury Planning Commission of area homebuyers and employees of some of the county’s largest businesses. The commission plans to use the results to help guide future planning efforts relating to neighborhoods and residential development.

CORNWALL — It is looking like Cornwall citizens will not field a Feb. 12 referendum on the Phase II natural gas pipeline after all.

Citing a recent decision by Vermont Gas to suspend its permitting efforts for Phase II, Cornwall selectboard members are poised to rescind a motion they made earlier this month to hold a townwide vote on whether the community should sign a compensation agreement with Vermont Gas.
