By John Flowers

SALISBURY — Salisbury residents on Tuesday voted 92 to 61 against repealing a new firearms ordinance intended to promote safety in the most populous parts of town.

Cheddar-making giant looms in Cabot plant

Posted on July 21, 2016 |
By Ellie Reinhardt

cabot1283.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Thanks to a huge new piece of machinery, the Cabot manufacturing plant in Middlebury’s industrial park will be able to process 4,000 more pounds of cheese curd per hour than the 8,000 pounds the current machine handles.

That’s as much weight as a fully grown great white shark or a large family car … every hour.

In Vermont, where cheese season never ends, that’s an announcement worth moo-ing about.

Peter Galbraith X 2.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Former Democratic state Sen. Peter Galbraith of Townsend is perhaps best known for the role he played as a diplomat on the international stage during much of the 1990s. As the U.S. Ambassador to Croatia, Galbraith helped negotiate an end to the Slavic nation’s war for independence.

Though he still likes to globetrot, Galbraith, 65, wants to use his networking skills closer to home, as governor of the state of Vermont.

Posted on July 21, 2016 |

LINCOLN — More than 50 people turned out at the Lincoln Community School on Monday to react to a new report detailing how the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union could switch to a new governance structure in which one board would govern all ANeSU schools under a single K-12 budget.

After almost two hours of discussion, participants left members of the ANeSU Act 46 Study Committee that crafted that plan with a lot of questions to answer during the months leading up to a scheduled Nov. 8 referendum on the unification proposal.

Vermont sets major goal for weatherizing homes

Posted on July 21, 2016 |
By Jan Demers

It took all I had not to turn and inch my way down the ladder. The attic was approaching 120 degrees. My covering consisted of a Tyvek suit tied at the ankles with foot coverings, gloves, mask and a headlamp. It was a small attic with a low ceiling. Heather and Kevin were blowing insulation. They had already applied a line of foam sealing. I was determined to stay in the stifling heat and carefully walked on the planks so as not to go through the ceiling. It was an experience of 15 minutes that will be long remembered. They were saving the world one house at a time.
