Whiting man cited for threatening

MIDDLEBURY — A Whiting man on Monday pleaded innocent to disorderly conduct in Addison Superior Court, criminal division, in connection with a June 2 incident during which he allegedly threatened and harassed a worker at the Whiting General Store.

Alan N. White III, who according to court records has previously used the aliases “Jesus Christ” and “Jesus Christ White,” is accused of having entered the store on June 2 and threatened the store employee, according to an affidavit filed by Vermont State Police Trooper Andrew Leise.

Ex-POWs honored at Bristol banquet

BRISTOL — Bristol American Legion recently hosted its annual Ex-POW Banquet for the Vermont Chapter No. 1 Ex-POWs. There were a total of 65 in attendance including nine ex-prisoners of war from around Vermont.

Most of the ex-POWs are from World War II. There is one local Ex-POW, Roger Layn, who lives in Monkton. The rest of the attendees were family and friends of the ex-POWs along with senior officers of the Department of Vermont American Legion.

Vergennes native promoted to captain in U.S. Navy

NEWPORT, R.I. — Brian A. Gebo, the son of Valli Gebo of Vergennes, Vt., has been promoted to the rank of captain in the U.S. Navy.

Gebo is currently serving as a student at the Naval Command College, U.S. Naval War College, Naval Station Newport, R.I. He has served in the military for 22 years.

J&M Aviation signs deal with glider company

MIDDLEBURY — Those living near the Middlebury State Airport have grown accustomed to the occasional buzz of small planes taking off and landing at the 2,500-foot runway off Airport Road.

Vermont Soap moving to a bigger space

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Soap will soon relocate from its fire-damaged home at 606 Exchange St. to a new, more spacious headquarters at 183 Industrial Avenue.

“We are going into double the space and will be able to expand production,” Vermont Soap founder and CEO Larry Plesant said on Monday as he and others cleared the last of the debris and company assets out of the 606 Exchange St. location.

Business organization honors trio of community builders

NEW HAVEN — The Better Middlebury Partnership (BMP) this past Thursday honored its 2014 Citizen and Business of the Year at its annual meeting at Lincoln Peak Vineyard in New Haven. Close to 50 people attended the event, which serves as part board meeting and part celebration of achievements in the community.

Nourishing meals are free for kids

MIDDLEBURY — Mary Hogan Elementary School officials wanted to be sure families knew about the new summer lunch program that started June 23. Through the Middlebury Nourishes Program, everyone ages 2 through 18 is invited to come have lunch for free at the Middlebury Recreation Park between noon and 1 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Marcotte family opens new tavern in North Ferrisburgh

FERRISBURGH — After several years with minimal dining options, North Ferrisburgh now has a restaurant where one can get a homemade breakfast sandwich, a cold draft beer and everything in between.

The Village Café and Tavern on Route 7 opened this April, boasting a full bar with 10 draft lines, drive-through Green Mountain Coffee and breakfast options, and dine-in lunches and dinners. It is owned and operated by Dianne and Marcel Marcotte and their son Travis Marcotte, all of North Ferrisburgh.

Middlebury officials revist terms of gas pipeline accord

MIDDLEBURY — At their meeting on Tuesday, the Middlebury selectboard reviewed an amended memorandum of agreement between the town and Vermont Gas related to the company’s proposed Phase II pipeline. That pipeline would extend from Middlebury to the International Paper mill in Ticonderoga, N.Y.

Double-wide home burns in Monkton

MONKTON — A home on State’s Prison Hollow Road in Monkton burned to the ground on Tuesday, June 24. The owners, Daniel and Anne Coolidge, were home when the fire started around 8:15 p.m. and promptly called 911, but firefighters were unable to save the structure.

“It was involved up and into the ceiling and roof area,” Monkton Fire Chief David Layn said. “It was not safe to get someone up there to ventilate.”
