College mulls new food studies program

MIDDLEBURY — An idea that started as a blog post last summer may become the newest field of study at Middlebury College.

Last summer, Amanda Warren and Ben Blackshear, students who currently head up the Middlebury College Organic Garden (MCOG), sat down to develop an unofficial program in Food and Agriculture Studies using courses already offered at the college. They posted the plan to their blog at middfood.com.

More than 3,000 dig in at Middlebury's chili festival

MIDDLEBURY — Costello’s Market took top culinary honors at Middlebury’s Third Annual Winter Carnival and Chili Festival, an event that drew more than 3,000 people to Addison County’s shire town, according to organizers.

The festival was held downtown with traffic blocked from Merchants Row and Main Street from the Middlebury Community House to the new rotary.

Deluge of snow putting strain on area road budgets

ADDISON COUNTY — This winter’s relentless snowfall has not only strained residents’ patience, but it has also stretched town budgets and worn out highway workers, according to at least a small sample of local municipal officials and road foremen.

Not only have expenses for materials like sand and salt gone up, but labor costs have also risen as road crews have worked long hours trying to keep roads and sidewalks clear. Meanwhile repair bills have also mounted as equipment has been pushed to the limit.

Car recycler to purchase old filaments property

MIDDLEBURY — A metal recycling company has entered into contract to buy the former Monahan Filaments property at 3046 Case St., Middlebury, where it plans to employ up to 30 people to disassemble vehicles and other metal equipment and sell the reusable parts.

The prospective buyer of the foreclosed property is Rutland-based Earth Waste Systems (EWS). The company already has a presence in Middlebury — as the Wyre Wheel at 4079 Route 7 South — and has other locations in Castleton and Morrisonville, N.Y.

Convenience store eyed for Court Street

MIDDLEBURY — The owners of the Vermont Energy Company (VEC) in Ferrisburgh have filed plans at Middlebury town offices to spin off another “alternative convenience store” with deli and gas pumps at the now-vacant Sunoco station at 48 Court St.

The Middlebury Development Review Board (DRB) on Monday, March 14, was slated to get its first look at VEC’s plans, which call for substantial interior renovations to the Sunoco building and an exterior paint job.

Hospital files electronic records

By early 2012, Middlebury residents will experience the seamless transfer of information between their physician’s office and Porter Medical Center, increasing efficiency and improving patient care.

Winter to go down in history

ADDISON COUNTY — According to data from the Burlington office of the National Weather Service, up to two feet of snow fell on Addison County in the storm earlier this week, far more than six to 10 inches forecasters had initially expected.

NWS monitors called in amounts that ranged from 21.7 inches in South Lincoln to 24 inches in both Bridport and the north end of Lincoln.

Elsewhere in the county, reporters to the NWS measured 23.8 inches in Salisbury, 23 in Salisbury, and 22 in Cornwall.
