Heminway and her dogs form bond for sledding success

SHOREHAM — I hear the howls before I can even see Lissy Heminway’s house in Shoreham. Their loud cries reverberate off the trees and into my ears, making me think I’m entering into some kind of coyote reserve.

As my car pulls up to the house on Shacksboro Road and I see the huge pen of 12 or so dogs hugging the fence, I remember where I am. Today I’m going dog sledding.

FERRISBURGH — Last Wednesday evening, the first fire chief of South Burlington Bud Monell handed Chief Bob Jenkins an antique fire alarm bell. Jenkins took the bell, and rang it twice.

“That’s dinnertime, he says,” Monell.

Just minutes before, as Monell stared out over the room of hundreds of volunteer firefighters, he became choked up. He was overwhelmed.

“I thought I would see just 40 or 50 or something like that,” he told the crowd, reminiscing about past dinners and former colleagues.

The answer lies in just four letters: B-A-S-K.

This fall, the two-decade-old Bristol After School Kids program, known locally as BASK, received a 21st century makeover. New workshops like acoustic guitar lessons, yoga and tech club are getting kids involved and excited about the program that has been ramped up thanks to a five-year, 21st Century Learning grant that Bristol Elementary was awarded this school year.

LINCOLN — Lincoln voters on Tuesday narrowly defeated a proposed $2 million bond to fund repairs and upgrades at Lincoln Community School.

ADDISON COUNTY — As cell phones become an integral part of cultural, social and intellectual life, county schools are re-evaluating their approaches to student use of the electronic gizmos — and coming up with some very different policies.

While administrators at Vergennes Union High School this week temporarily instituted new, stricter cell phone rules, Middlebury Union High School was getting ready to loosen its rules at the end of a lengthy evaluation process.

MIDDLEBURY — An ad hoc committee is putting together plans for a major makeover of Middlebury’s fire stations, and local fire officials are scheduled to update residents on those plans at town meeting in March. A bond vote could follow later this year.

“My hope is we would have something to the voters by this summer or fall,” Middlebury Fire Department Chief Rick Cole said on Monday. “We don’t want to rush into anything, but we want to keep things moving.”

Posted on January 20, 2011 |
By Andrea Suozzo

ADDISON COUNTY — Addison County dairy farmers may stand to receive some cold, hard cash, pending the U.S. District Court of Vermont’s approval of a settlement agreement submitted in late December.

The Dean Foods Company and representative dairy farmers are waiting for court approval on a $30 million settlement that the two parties signed last month, which would conclude one part of a months-long class-action suit that accused three companies of price-fixing and illegal monopolizing of the Northeast dairy market.
