State police offer tips to businesses about armed robbery

VERMONT — Are you a victim of a robbery? Do you know what to do and what to look for? The Vermont State Police want to help local businesses that may fall victim to a robbery by providing tips about how to be safe and how to be a good witness.

Statewide, there have been 50 reported armed robberies in Vermont so far in 2013, including 19 incidents where a handgun was displayed. This is on trend with the four-year average of 50.75 armed robberies each year.

Town leaders say college President Liebowitz, who annunced he's leaving, has had large impact

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College President Ron Liebowitz has left a lasting mark on Middlebury — both the college and the town. Liebowitz this past Thursday announced he will step down on June 30, 2015, from the top leadership position he has held since 2004.

Damaged ceiling closes St. Stephen's worship hall, church eyes repairs as Christmas nears

MIDDLEBURY — St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church officials are sizing up damage to the ceiling within the main worship hall of the historic building on Middlebury’s town green, in hopes of soon resuming regular services in that space.

Vergennes students creates CD with help from music industry pro

VERGENNES — On Dec. 19 the Vergennes Opera House will host a CD release party for one member of the theater’s board of directors — Vergennes Union High School senior Matteo Palmer.

Palmer, who organized and played at a 2012 concert at the theater to benefit the Vergennes Opera House, next week will play two sets of music as he introduces his CD, “Out of Nothing.” He recorded the disc with the help of Grammy-winning New Age musician and Windham Hill Records founder Will Ackerman.

Middlebury College, town wrangle over terms for park

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday failed to muster enough votes to pass a revised term sheet outlining the mechanics of an agreement with Middlebury College on construction of a new town office building and recreation center, with some members voicing concern at the institution’s rejection of a request that the current municipal building/gym site be perpetually maintained as a public park.

Voters back $2.88 million VUHS bond

VERGENNES — Addison Northwest Supervisory Union voters on Tuesday backed, by 682-487, a $2.88 million bond request from the Vergennes Union High School board to fund work at the 55-year-old school, the major elements of which will be a new kitchen and cafeteria and upgrades to the school auditorium that would return it to full use.

Officials said most of the project should be completed during summer months.

Committee to help Ilsley Library with expansion plans

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday declined a request from Ilsley Public Library directors that the design of the proposed new town office building be revised to reflect 3,000 to 4,000 square feet of additional space for a children’s library.

But selectboard members agreed to study, and take on as a priority, the library’s space needs and didn’t close the door on the possibility that at least some of those needs could be addressed within the new town office project.

Porter nurses union gets OK; talks on contract not yet set

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center nurses have officially unionized under the banner of the Vermont Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals. That confirmation comes in light of the fact that union supporters and Porter administrators have resolved 16 challenged ballots that were cast in the vote held on Nov. 7.

“The hospital and the nurses have come to an agreement on the challenged votes,” Registered Nurse Alice Leo, a union supporter and co-organizer, said on Monday.

DeWitt, Kurth appointed to Mt. Abe board

BRISTOL — The Bristol Elementary School board on Monday filled two vacancies on the Mount Abraham Union High School board.

Members of the local board interviewed the three candidates who submitted letters of interest at the meeting and then appointed Douglas DeWitt and Alicia Kurth, board vice chair Kelly Laliberte said. Joanne Casey was the third applicant.

City residents support council on gas pipeline

VERGENNES — By a 345 to 143 margin Vergennes residents on Tuesday backed the city council’s stance in favor of the Vermont Gas Systems Inc. pipeline extension into Addison County that, if approved, could also serve up to 929 of the 932 properties in Vergennes.
