Murray hopes third time is charm in run for Middlebury selectboard

Sled dogs keep Addison man young

How long in life can you continue to pursue physically and emotionally demanding hobbies that have you outside in extreme temperatures, facing challenging and even dangerous scenarios?

The answer for Ed Blechner, dog sled driver of almost 40 years, is “as long as I can.”

Blechner, now 66, first got into dog sledding in 1975. “I was always interested in dogs in functional, non-traditional ways,” he says. With a parallel interest in winter camping, working with sled dogs seemed like a natural hobby to pursue.

State eminent domain laws tip balance toward Vt. Gas

ADDISON COUNTY — If Vermont Gas Systems does move forward with eminent domain proceedings against Addison County landowners to secure necessary easements to build its proposed natural gas pipeline, it will have both state statute and recent precedents on its side.

The Canadian-owned utility sent letters to nine Monkton homes last month stating that if an agreement on a right-of-way easement could not be reached, the utility would have no choice but to begin the process of eminent domain.

I’m driving to work too fast, late as usual, trying to make up for those last five minutes I spent puttering around my house when I should have gotten out the door. I lean on the accelerator a little and grab my trusty travel mug, lifting it to my lips just as my wheels hit a bumpy, rippled section of the pavement. I hit the brakes. The tires make painful washboard sounds, and coffee splashes out of my cup and all over the steering wheel.

Major solar farm proposed for Route 7 South in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — A New Jersey company is proposing to build a 9,000-panel, 2.2-megawatt solar farm on 13.5 acres off Route 7 south in Middlebury, a project that would send enough electricity into the state’s grid to annually power 519 Vermont homes.

It’s a project being proposed by Champlain Valley Solar Farm, LLC (CVSF), which lists itself as being affiliated with the SunEdison office in Pennsauken, N.J. SunEdison is headquartered in Belmont, Calif.

Carnevale comes to the Little City

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Opera House will be transformed into a smaller replica of San Marco Plaza, the famous plaza in Venice, Italy, on Saturday, March 1, from 7 to 10 p.m., for “Carnevale Vergennes.” This gala event features an evening full of music, surprising entertainment, unusual raffle items and guests in masks and costumes.

Top court backs Rt. 7 store in Ferrisburgh

FERRISBURGH — The Vermont Supreme Court on Feb. 14, 2014, upheld a 2012 Environmental Court ruling favoring a Dollar General store proposed for the Ferrisburgh intersection of Route 7 and Monkton Road.

The Ferrisburgh Zoning Board of Adjustment in February 2011 first granted landowners Group Five LLC a permit for the discount retail store. It is proposed for a 9.9-acre field that lies across Monkton Road from Denecker Chevrolet and across Route 7 from a solar farm.

UD-3 voters to consider recreation facility lease Feb. 25

MIDDLEBURY — Middle­bury’s plan to build a new recreation facility off Creek Road will face its first major hurdle at the annual UD-3 meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 25, when district voters will be asked to authorize the negotiation of a lease for the land on which the 11,500-square-foot facility would be built.

Monkton residents decry Vermont Gas tactics after company threatens to use eminent domain

MONKTON — Vermont Gas Systems has said it will use eminent domain to obtain Monkton land it needs to build its pipeline through Addison County if town landowners do not agree to let the company cross their land.

At least some Monkton residents said they consider that tactic to be threatening.

George seeks encore on Middlebury board to cap 2014 agenda

MIDDLEBURY — With almost 18 years logged with Middlebury’s top elected board and his latest term set to expire this March, Middlebury selectboard Chairman Dean George had seriously considered riding into the sunset. But he decided to place his name on the ballot again this year in an effort to take care of what he believes is some unfinished business.
