Healthcare expert forecasts bumpy road in Vermont

MIDDLEBURY — Green Mountain Care Board member Dr. Allan Ramsay urged Addison County’s medical community to be patient as the state transitions to a new health care system that he acknowledged will be fraught with change and challenges.

“One of the things I’ve learned intensely over the past two years is that change is very hard,” Ramsay said at Porter Medical Center’s annual meeting last week. “It is very hard to change the system.”

Quarry Hill stages fun ski festival

HANCOCK — It was a great time at the fourth annual Iguana Cup Ski Race Sunday, March 23, at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl. Many familiar faces turned up to enjoy a day of outdoor fun and festivities. The sun was shining and it really was a very successful fundraiser for Quarry Hill School. We could not have done it without the wonderful parents who volunteered and raced in the event with friends and families.

Orwell library awarded $1,000 to buy kids books

ORWELL — State Librarian Martha Reid, on behalf of the Winnie Belle Learned Fund of the Vermont Public Library Foundation, recently presented a grant of $1,000 to the Orwell Free Library in Orwell.

The library used the funding to enhance its collection of early reader books for local children. A new shelf, paid for by the Friends of the Orwell Free Library, will house the collection.

Bobolink Project seeks help protecting nesting habitat on farms

BURLINGTON — Songbird populations have been declining in recent years due to threats to their nesting habitat. To help reverse that trend, the Bobolink Project uses community contributions to compensate farmers for adopting haying practices that protect nesting habitats of grassland birds.

Middlebury gears up for busy construction season

VUHS graduate promoted to brigadier general

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — A 1981 graduate of Vergennes Union High School has become a one-star general in the U.S. Army.

Jeffrey A. Farnsworth was promoted to brigadier general March 13 in a ceremony at the Pentagon. His parents are Carol and Allen Farnsworth of Waltham.

Farnsworth is the deputy commanding general for operations at U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command (USASMDC/ARSTRAT).

Town administrator to end his eight-year run in Bristol

BRISTOL — After 30 years of dealing with pot holes, dog bite complaints and municipal budgets, Bristol town administrator Bill Bryant is ready to retire. Bryant, 57, tendered his letter of resignation at the March 17 selectboard meeting; and his last day will be April 30.

“It seemed like the right time to make a decision for me and the person who replaces me,” Bryant said, noting that the next fiscal year’s budget has been developed and approved by voters.

Monkton Central team shines at Odyssey of the Mind tourney

MONKTON — At the Odyssey of the Mind State Tournament on Saturday, March 22, Monkton Central School’s team placed first in its division for writing and acting out the play “People Are People.” Judges commented that there was an “excellent stage presence by all characters” and a “wonderful use of humor.” The win qualifies the team to compete at the Odyssey of the Mind World Championship in Iowa later this spring.

College giving development land behind Ilsley to town

MIDDLEBURY — It was originally presented as a real estate swap. Middlebury College would acquire the Lazarus building at 20 Main St. and convey it to the town for demolition for better access into the Marble Works Business District. In return, the town would cede a small  property behind Ilsley Library (less than a third of an acre) to the college, which would add to its own 1-plus acre of land to create a 1.4-acre parcel that it would market for a future economic development project to strengthen the downtown.

City aldermen see value in brainstorming about Vergennes future

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen at their Tuesday meeting said they expected the March 18 “Community Visit” organized by the Vermont Council on Rural Development (VCRD) to produce a number of concrete proposals to improve the city for its residents.

Mayor Bill Benton said 111 residents on March 18 signed up for nine workshops moderated by the VCRD and attended by more than two-dozen high-ranking state and county officials and private-sector experts, while 90 residents sat down at a community dinner at St. Peter’s Church that evening.
