Practice offers alternative in end of life care

web_drbarnard.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — For Middlebury resident Stephanie Smith’s mother, Marthena Smith, slow medicine seemed to be the right fit.

Marthena Smith, who died in June at age 89, enrolled herself in Porter Hospital’s Partners in Palliative and Home Care program the previous December. She had a stomach problem, and it seemed as though she was sick all the time.

“She just made the decision to go to them herself,” Stephanie Smith said. “They empowered both me and my mother to make decisions that were best for her.”

WEYBRIDGE — Cow Power is coming to Monument Farms.

The methane digester program run by Central Vermont Public Service Corp. launched its Cow Power pilot program at Blue Spruce Farms in Bridport in 2005, and since then has added six more farms around the state. The digesters use cow manure to create electricity that CVPS buys from the farms and sells to environmentally conscious customers.

Posted on October 21, 2010 |
By John Flowers

WILLISTON — For the past six years, Rep. Steve Maier has been helping shape the state’s health care reform policy from the Statehouse chambers.

The Middlebury Democrat will now implement that policy in line with the new state job he officially started on Monday: The Department of Vermont Health Access’s (VHA) “Health Care Reform - Health Information Technology Integration Manager.”

“I’m pretty excited to get started,” Maier, 54, said during a phone interview during his first day on the job with the VHA.

John Irving reads at Mead Chapel

Posted on October 21, 2010 |
By Tamara Hilmes

MIDDLEBURY — After years of wondering and surmising along with her husband, one Monkton resident was finally able to ask John Irving last week if he had, in fact, named his main character of the novel “Cider House Rules” after her husband and his father, both also Homer Wells.

Her husband’s father grew up in an orphanage in Maine, she said into the microphone in the center aisle of Middlebury College’s Mead Chapel on Oct. 13, and she was wondering if Irving had stumbled across the name during his research.

Editor’s note: This is the first of a two-part series on changes in teaching about food and agriculture in area schools.

ADDISON COUNTY — In Steve Colangeli’s classroom, students learn biology, chemistry, environmental science and economics, plus job skills like teamwork.

But Colangeli’s classroom doesn’t have four walls. Instead, it’s rows of raised beds, 10 in all. And despite the looming winter, his students are already working to get the beds ready for next year’s growing season.

Sidewalk repairs won't dip into city taxpayers' pockets

Posted on October 18, 2010 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Vergennes City Manager Mel Hawley last week said the project to repair the sidewalk and provide handicap access to businesses at the intersection of Main and Green streets should be complete by mid-November, at no direct cost to city taxpayers.

The project, which will also improve a bus stop and a sidewalk bulb-out at the intersection’s southeast corner, carries a total starting price tag of about $84,500, which Hawley said will be inflated by a few change orders.

Architect influenced by native landscape

Posted on October 18, 2010 |
By Tamara Hilmes

MIDDLEBURY — Brian Mackay-Lyons likened his native Nova Scotia to an “ocean-coated Vermont,” in a talk he delivered at Middlebury College’s Dana Auditorium on Thursday, Oct. 8.

“It’s a real treat to see the beautiful Vermont landscape,” the internationally recognized architect said. “It’s a world-quality place. You know that.”

And a sense of place is exactly what draws Mackay-Lyons to Vermont, along with the additional two Cameron Visiting Architects, who are to take up a brief residency on campus this fall.

Gleaners comb the fields for leftovers

Posted on October 18, 2010 |
By Andrea Suozzo

MIDDLEBURY — For the second year running, the Addison Gleaners can be found out in the fields, picking peppers, root vegetables, Swiss chard and anything else that happens to be left over.

This produce will never see a table at the farmers’ market or a wholesale bin — everything that the gleaners pick goes to the food shelf at Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects, or HOPE, in Middlebury.
