Lafiandra gets short stint on Middlebury selectboard

MIDDLEBURY — Ann Lafiandra’s brief tenure as a Middlebury selectwoman began Tuesday evening, when the board picked her to temporarily fill a vacancy left by Victor Nuovo, who resigned last month.

The board gave Lafiandra the nod over the other applicant, Chris Zeoli, who had recently been appointed tree warden.

Police make big drug bust in Brandon

BRANDON — Police acting on a tip seized over 400 bags of heroin and crack cocaine at a house on Carver Street in Brandon on Feb. 5 and made two arrests in the largest drug bust in Brandon’s recent history.

Brandon Police executed the search warrant at 43 Carver St. at 2:30 p.m. on that Wednesday after receiving information alleging illegal sales of heroin at that location.

Ferrisburgh voters face budget issues on Town Meeting Day

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh residents on Town Meeting Day will make a series of budget decisions that could have major impacts on town employees, who disagree with the selectboard on some issues, and also must decide to support school spending that would dramatically increase school tax rates.

They will also make decisions on races for town clerk and treasurer now that a write-in candidate has emerged to challenge the candidates who will be on the ballot, all of whom will be seeking to replace retiring Town Clerk and Treasurer Chet Hawkins.

ANwSU picks two superintendent finalists

VERGENNES — Two finalists for the post of Addison Northwest Supervisory Union superintendent will visit the district schools on Feb. 24, meet with the public during that afternoon, and sit with the ANwSU board that evening for final interviews.

They are Orleans Southwest Supervisory Union Superintendent JoAn Canning and former South Burlington Assistant Superintendent and Vermont School Board Association Director Winton Goodrich.

Wayne Howe opts out of ANwSU superintendent search

VERGENNES — Longtime Addison Central School Principal Wayne Howe, who has also served during this school year as the part-time Addison Northwest Supervisory Union assistant superintendent, said late last week that he has taken a job elsewhere and withdrew from consideration as the new ANwSU superintendent.

Howe’s decision, first made public in a Feb. 7 email to ANwSU staff members, predated this Tuesday’s announcement by the ANwSU superintendent search committee that it had identified two finalists for the job (see story, this page).

Cost of health care transistion is still unclear

WHITING — With 2017 fast approaching, Addison County residents are pressing lawmakers to estimate the cost of Vermont’s proposed conversion to a single-payer health care system. Act 48, passed by the Legislature in 2011, called for a detailed plan for a single-payer health system by 2017, and a financing scheme was due last year.

Lawmakers discuss pipeline regulation

WHITING  — Monday’s Legislative Breakfast in Whiting drew several Cornwall residents who urged lawmakers to slow down or suspend a Public Service Board review of Vermont Gas Systems’s proposed “Phase II” natural gas pipeline. The $70 million project is designed to deliver natural gas from Middlebury to the International Paper mill in Ticonderoga, N.Y.

Local students are winners in Vermont Brain Bee

BURLINGTON — The fifth annual Vermont Brain Bee (VBB) was held Saturday, Feb. 8, at the University of Vermont’s Medical Education Building in Burlington.

“What a fun and successful day,” said Sharon Leach, PhD and neuropsychologist from the Stern Center for Language and Learning. “We are definitely building beautiful brains in these high school students.”

Health officials warn about fentanyl-laced heroin

ADDISON COUNTY — Fentanyl is being sold and packaged as heroin and state officials say just a few grains of the pure drug “can stop your breathing and kill.”

The Vermont State Police issued a statement Feb. 5 urging Vermonters not to inject fentanyl, or any other drug that has not been prescribed by a doctor.
