Former school bus driver charged in sex assault case

ORWELL — An Orwell man was ordered to jail in lieu of $50,000 bail after pleading innocent in Addison County Superior Court (criminal division) on May 13 to a felony count of aggravated sexual assault on a minor.

U.S. Energy Secretary talks climate change at Middlebury College

MIDDLEBURY — The U.S. Secretary of Energy praised Vermont’s efforts in renewable energy development and defended the expansion of natural gas use at a panel at Middlebury College Friday morning.

Secretary Ernest Moniz was flanked by the state’s Congressional delegation and Gov. Peter Shumlin, as well as state business and academic leaders.

Principal Ed Webbley to leave Vergennes

VERGENNES — Vergennes Union High School Co-Principal Edwin Webbley will leave his post after eight years for a similar job: Effective on July 1 he will become a co-principal at The Danville School, a smaller Division IV high school in Caledonia County.

VUHS budget earns support on second try after teacher cuts

VERGENNES — It took two tries, but voters in the Addison Northwest Supervisory Union on Tuesday approved a 2014-2015 budget for Vergennes Union High School.

“I’m happy for all of us that the budget passed,” ANwSU Superintendent Tom O’Brien said. “It sets the stage for us to move forward.”

Local lawmakers review the 2014 session

MONTPELIER — Local lawmakers and Gov. Peter Shumlin this week were tying a bow on what they said was a very productive 2014 session of the Vermont Legislature, one they said has paved the way for new jobs, fewer drug addicts, a higher minimum wage and a record investment in the state’s roads, bridges and culverts.

Lawmakers wrapped up their work at the Vermont Statehouse on Saturday, May 10, capping more than four months of work on a litany of issues ranging from boilerplate municipal charter changes to a $5.5 billion state budget.

Voters affirm Middlebury town office, gym project, 880-714

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents on Tuesday affirmed their support of the $6.5 million town offices-recreation center project by an 880 to 714 tally, a vote that paves the way for the two new buildings to proceed through final design, review, permitting and construction.

Tuesday’s referendum was a revote on the same project that residents had endorsed on Town Meeting Day, 915 to 798.
