Natural gas pipeline to serve some in Ferrisburgh, Waltham

FERRISBURGH — Construction will begin soon on the Vermont Gas Systems pipeline extension that will serve Vergennes and run about three miles along Plank Road from a new New Haven distribution station to Route 7 and from there to the city, according to company officials.

Along the south side of Plank Road, the pipeline extension will pass through parts of Ferrisburgh and Waltham as well as New Haven, and it could serve homes in those towns, said Vermont Gas spokesman Steve Wark late last week.

Pipeline plan gets frosty reception

SHOREHAM — Some came displaying colorful banners, bearing such slogans as “Tap lines, not gas lines,” and “Plant trees, not pipelines.”

Others recited poems and prayers.

All who walked up to the microphone spoke passionately.

Teens stuck on public awareness

ADDISON COUNTY — Groups of students from Mount Abraham and Vergennes union high schools took part in a recent “Sticker Shock” day around the county.

The purpose of Sticker Shock is to reinforce public awareness about the minimum drinking age law by placing stickers on packs of beer larger than a six-pack. The goal of this project is to discourage adults and older peers (those who are 21 or over) from providing alcohol to minors.

Middlebury project revote set for Tuesday

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents will go to the polls next Tuesday, May 13, to vote again on a $6.5 million plan to build new town offices and a recreation center.

Residents on March 4 voted 915 to 798 in favor of the plan, which calls for a new, 9,400-square-foot municipal building to be built at 77 Main St. and a new, 11,500-square-foot recreation center to be erected on land off Creek Road.

Pipeline opponents, supporters testify in Shoreham

SHOREHAM — More than 170 people flooded the Shoreham Elementary School gym on Wednesday evening to weigh in on a controversial plan to extend a natural gas pipeline from Middlebury to the International Paper Co. mill in Ticonderoga, N.Y., with most of the speakers urging state regulators to deny a permit for a $70 million project for environmental and public safety reasons.

Ferrisburgh to decide school budget after cuts

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh residents on Tuesday, May 13, will decide the fate of a $3.5 million Ferrisburgh Central School budget proposal that is about $120,000 lower than the FCS board’s initial plan that lost on March 4, 450-279, or about 62-38 percent.

Ferrisburgh to consider land next to town offices, school

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard on Tuesday agreed to continue talking to Charlotte resident Clark Hinsdale III about possibly buying his 2.2-acre lot behind the town office building, a parcel that also abuts Ferrisburgh Central School and United Methodist Church property.

Hinsdale — a former Ferrisburgh resident who said he planned to move back to town — contacted the FCS board and town officials about a year ago and offered the land to the town or school for $40,000.

Sheldon exhibit shows the evolution of regional gardens

MIDDLEBURY — A new, colorful exhibit has bloomed at the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History. On May 6,  the “Lost Gardens of New England” took root for a three-month run that will breathe new life into some of the region’s most resplendent flowers of yesteryear.
