NEW HAVEN/STARKSBORO — Rep. Chris Bray, D-New Haven, and Starksboro Republican Mark Snelling finished on the losing end of their respective party’s primary races for lieutenant governor, but voters have likely not heard the last from the two candidates.

“For my first statewide race coming from a small town in Addison County, I’m pleased at how close I was,” Bray, a two-term House incumbent said in reaction to his loss, by 52 percent to 48 percent of the vote, to Rep. Steve Howard, D-Rutland City.

BRISTOL — Residents of Bristol and those who pass through the village will soon breathe a sigh of relief when driving downtown.

That’s because the construction under North and South streets that has kept portions of the roads unpaved all summer is nearing its completion a month ahead of schedule, according to town administrator Bill Bryant.

The project, which included replacing a section of the town’s stormwater system and upgrades to the water main in the downtown area, began in April and was originally scheduled to conclude in November.

Late blight threat at bay, for now

Posted on August 26, 2010 |
By Andrea Suozzo

ADDISON COUNTY — As late summer draws on, farmers and home gardeners alike are checking their tomatoes and potatoes for signs of late blight.

So far, though, they’ve mostly been able to breathe a collective sigh of relief, since the fungus that was widespread by the middle of last summer has only reared its head in a handful of isolated cases this year.

“I’m hyper vigilant about noticing anything,” said Karen LeRoy, whose tomatoes at Popoma Farm in Whiting were hard hit by the late blight last summer. “I think I’m finding more (this year) because I’m looking for it.”

By Tamara Hilmes

BRISTOL — After nearly 40 years of game play, the Bristol tennis courts are finally getting a much-deserved facelift. The Bristol Recreation Club Inc. is replacing the two existing tennis courts, which were originally installed in the mid-’70s and have since been patched, re-surfaced, and re-patched.

“Our only option was to tear them out and start over,” said Jim Devall, former president of the Bristol Recreation Club and current chair of the Field Committee. Devall has helped head up the fund-raising effort for the new courts, which began eight months ago.
