Bristol residents appeal Lathrop pit decision to Supreme Court

BRISTOL — A 10-year battle to open a gravel pit in Bristol will likely come to end in front of the state’s highest court. A group of Bristol residents are appealing an Oct. 18 Environmental Court decision authorizing the construction of the pit to the Supreme Court.

Mount Abe school board seeks to fill two vacancies

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union Middle/High School Board is looking for Bristol residents to fill two vacancies that have opened on the 13-member board. Board members Dick Merrill and Gary Farnsworth recently resigned before the completion of their terms.

The Bristol Elementary School board will fill the vacancies.

State officials warn of three different phone scams

VERMONT — Officials from two government agencies and from the state’s largest utility are warning Vermonters to be wary of three different scams being perpetrated over the telephone.

The Vermont Department of Financial Regulation (DFR) last week alerted Vermonters to scams regarding Vermont Health Connect, the state’s health insurance exchange. Commissioner Susan L. Donegan said that the department has received reports of fraudulent phone calls made to Vermonters by people pretending to sell health insurance in order to obtain personal information.

Committee girds for information blitz on Middlebury town office proposal

MIDDLEBURY — A group planning Middlebury’s proposed new town offices and recreation center is planning a series of public meetings, open houses, flyers and a documentary film to educate residents about the $7.5 million project in anticipation of a March 4, 2014, referendum.

Homeschoolers came in droves for soccer

MIDDLEBURY — This fall in Middlebury a large group of homeschoolers got together and formed a soccer team to practice and improve our skill. Our team consisted of around 50 kids (ages 1-16) from in and around Addison County. Elizabeth Curran of Whiting organized the group and was amazed at the awesome turnout from our homeschool community.

Ferrisburgh residents can weigh in on proposed Rt. 22A land sale to dealership

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh residents have a few more days if they want to petition for a special meeting to consider the proposed $350,000 sale of 34.91 town-owned acres to Denecker Real Estate Investments LLC. That deal is projected to close on or before April 24, 2014.

'Lady Grey' reaches goal, hikes Appalacian Trail at age 56

BRISTOL — Of the people who begin hiking the Appalachian Trail with the intention of covering the entire thing, only one in four complete it. Most are young, recent college graduates, students taking a gap year, all with young joints and plenty of energy.

Not many 56-year-old women attempt the nearly 2,200-mile, 14-state trek, let alone complete it.

Cornwall landowner group opposed to natural gas pipeline

CORNWALL — A group of Cornwall residents who own land that would be crossed by a proposed natural gas pipeline are looking for consensus on how to react to the Vermont Gas Systems proposal.

On Oct. 30, seven Cornwall landowners who are being asked to host the Addison Natural Gas Project transmission line that would serve International Paper Co. in Ticonderoga, N.Y., met at the home of Randy and Mary Martin to discuss their opposition to the project. They sat around the dining room table and discussed their concerns

New exhibit spotlights sheep paintings

MIDDLEBURY — For the past 12 years, artist Carolyn Letvin has been engaged in a dialogue with sheep, with them becoming her primary source of imagery. She reasons that sheep are often one of the first images presented in life, between nursery rhymes, children’s stories and nursery room motifs, creating formative visual experiences. Perhaps, she muses, we count sheep our whole lives?
