CORNWALL — Construction crews have been busy preparing a temporary span on which to divert Route 125 traffic during the upcoming replacement of the Lemon Fair Bridge in Cornwall.

“We’re within a week or two of shipping traffic over the temporary bridge, then we will work on the new bridge,” Vermont Agency of Transportation resident Engineer Joe Knipes said late last week.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard is considering an interim zoning change that would open the door to more business development near the east end of the soon-to-be completed Cross Street Bridge.

The board is tentatively set to hold a public hearing on Sept. 28 to receive feedback on the plan, which calls for zoning for properties fronting Cross and South Pleasant streets to be changed from “office-apartment” to “village-residential-commercial.”

County voters back Dunne, Shumlin

web_alstiles4207.jpg

CORRECTION: Sen. Peter Shumlin, D-Putney, received 41 votes in Ripton for the Aug. 24 Democrat primary for governor, not the mere four tallies reported in the Thursday, Aug. 26, edition of the Addison Independent. This means that Shumlin notched a total of 1,395 votes in Addison County, not the 1,356 previously reported. This total of 1,395 means that Shumlin was in fact the top vote-getter in the county, narrowly eclipsing Hartland Democrat Matt Dunne’s 1,372 tallies.

“For my first statewide race coming from a small town in Addison County, I’m pleased at how close I was,” Bray, a two-term House incumbent said in reaction to his loss, by 52 percent to 48 percent of the vote, to Rep. Steve Howard, D-Rutland City.

BRISTOL — Residents of Bristol and those who pass through the village will soon breathe a sigh of relief when driving downtown.

That’s because the construction under North and South streets that has kept portions of the roads unpaved all summer is nearing its completion a month ahead of schedule, according to town administrator Bill Bryant.

The project, which included replacing a section of the town’s stormwater system and upgrades to the water main in the downtown area, began in April and was originally scheduled to conclude in November.
